what's the problem with people using instant messenger applications ?
I use two IMs at work, one for communicating with non-company contacts, and one (secure) for internal contacts - makes life very easy when trying to get information from people, and far more efficient than email (sometimes).
We had a big disagreement abouts IMs in my team, and the basic outcome was that people can abuse any service thay have access to, and the precluding IMs only meant that email/phone/wandering off would be abused as a substitute - trust the employee to use common sense, and monitor their overall performance. Needless to say that 18 months on we have no major issues with IMs, and those that have underperformed don't use IMs!

when you have 1200 kids on a LAN than comprises of more than 400 workstations..all it takes is 200 workstations to be using IM on the network and then you can imagine the network slowdown one might expect!

I recommend blocking the ports used for file sharing - don't have them to hand - it's a nice way to circumvent gateway antivirus and place problems on the desktop where they need more support.

You could always block the traffic at your firewall (if you have one) Microshaft Instant messenger uses TCP Port 1863.
Cheers
Si.
Of course that will only stop traffic to and from the internet
