Question

When I turned on my stand-alone PC this morning I got a battery failure warning. Something like CMOS battery or something but I didn’t’ really see word properly. PC then booted but clock and date function had slowed or stopped. I assumed that this was some battery (that powered internals when mains power off) that simply needed replacing but my PC supplier said it wasn’t like this and said it might take some time to fix. Any thoughts please as I cannot afford to be without PC for a day or so. Thanks, David

I think your supplier is trying to milk you.

Change the cmos battery. Its probably something like a CR2032.

Thanks HH. I think so too!! I take it that this would be a 5 minute job for them? I wouldn't know what to do or where to get battery from. Thanks again. David

It's fairly easy.
Open the box, look on the motherboard for a button shaped battery.
Remove the battery and go to somewhere like

PC World
Dixons
Jessops ( camera shop )

They are all bound to have that battery in stock as it is pretty common.
Just chuck the new one in and close the box again.
All that will be left to do is set the date and time back again.

Iain :-)

If you can open the case up - you will see a flat battery (literally!) like a big watch battery on the motherboard - just take it out and go to a PC shop with it.

Cool

Very impressive service boys - I will stop being rude about PC bods from now on

Will get sledgehammer out later and go for it. If I get electrocuted Mrs L will be after you (yes I will unplug first!).

Thanks, David
