Well when external emails are coming in and being checked they seem to be getting held up in the holding area, so they have been checked by our various content checking but they seem to be taking a long time being forwarded to our exchange server. Any ideas??

So they are actually going to the Exchange server in the end then?, the prob is they are taking a long time..correct?

What's the spec of the server?
Is it scanning for Viruses?
Are they large attachments on the messages held?

I don't think it is the size of the emails as we have a restriction on them and when they can be delivered (out of hours). Just wondering if in fact they are being virus scanned, it takes about an hour to reach a inbox. The servers are all fairly top spec.

Could be your virus scanner, I found Mcafee very slow, but Sophos nice and speedy.

Mailsweeper has always recomended a dll based AV engine (like Sophos).

I'd check the website for more info....

Jeff

Also have a look at this as it appears to be a know issue

We use Mcafee cmd line version, this is so we can trap any virus infected emails for analysis. It's a little on and off, i have a feeling that it may be the antivirus updates, we have had some problems with these before.

Do you keep backups of the old AV updates?, if so try re-applying the last known good, maybe bounce the MSW box, and see if the speed increases

Do you have the inbound route forced to the exchange box. I've seen this problem when there's been a name resolution issue.

SMTP Relay / Routing

Incoming forced to the Exchange Servers, put this rule at the top of the routing list.

Most likely going to be the virus scan holding things up me thinks, as above, make sure you got a dll based scan such as Sophos and it'll be quicker.

(Or use Messagelabs like we do and forget about smtp viruses)

We've put in a NAI e500 system (developed in the UK, anything to do with you Jack?) and it was well slow - found the problem was DNS. Check that

I'm with mega_stream on this......go to Messagelabs and let someone else worry about the problem.
