A work colleague has bought in a home PC for me to look at which has me completely stumped.

Windows ME (I know I know!) And FreeServe Internet.

PC dials up to freeserve with no problems and surfs OK
Open Outlook Express and do a Send & Receive. It recives mail perfectly, but will not send.

It comes up with:-
The connection to the server has failed. Account 'Nicola's Mail', Server 'smtp.freeserve.com', Protocol SMTP, Port 25, Secure(SSL) No, Socket Error 10060, Error Number 0x800CCC0E

I have checked the POP & SMTP settings in OE, both are as expected, pop.freeserve.com & smtp.freeserve.com
I have checked Freeserve website - these are both correct.

I deleted the mail account out of OE and made a new one, same.

It has no firewall running on this PC to block the ports....

I have loaded lastest version of IE & OE (6), run Ad-Aware, Reloaded ME over the top of itself, but no joy.

What I can't understand is that it cannot find the SMTP host, but the only place it is connected to is freeserve, and it finds the POP host....

Anybody ANY clues as to what is happening here?

I had this problem on my mates PC, I bet your telephone number is ex directory. The number you dial up needs to be prefixed with 1470. See if that works.

Go into tools, accounts, select the account you are talking about and click the servers tab.

Click the 'My server requires authentication'. click advanced and make sure you have 'use same log in details as incoming mail server'.

hope this helps,

The mail server is up. Its a local problem.

can you browse the net OK? make sure you are getting a valid IP from freeserve if not.

Failing that, phone the 'I have no skills what-so-ever' helpdesk.

Check that you are logging in using secure password authentication in the settings of the mail account.

If you are then change it and vice versa and see what happens.

The mail server may be up, but can you contact it? Try and ping smtp.freeserve.com - if you can't it might be a DNS issue.

But he can send mail OK, so DNS must be OK.

I have a sneaky feeling that his server requires authentication. Not SPA.

Thanks for the help.... I tried all the above but still no luck.

I got pissed off in the end and set up my own Virgin account on this PC - bizzarely it worked perfectly...

So I've shot freeserve in the head & set up a new virgin account for her and all is now hunky dory.

Still doesnt explain to me why the hell freeserve had stoppped working though...!

Thank again guy's...
