Am running windows XP.

going away soon and want my dvd player to be usable for films.

Apparently the software is on the recovery cd but I cant find it.

does anyone have one or know another way I can watch. Its running windows media player but apparently it isnt the player preventing me from watching dvds.

Would also like to be able to watch divx if someone has a suggestion on that too.

dont know havent tried.

am told I need a dvd decoder which is what comes on the recovery cd.

Was hoping to be able to simply put in a region 2 dvd and open the file as normal, but the dvd does not have the software to play back movies as is.

unfortunately I am a computer retard so cant explain more than this.

Bought the thing new, but cant find what I need. so it is as it came from the factory. Would have thought others had experienced the same thing and would thus know how to sort it.

whilst I am at it, is there a prospect of a region hack for it at the same time?

Media Player in XP should play DVD's as standard, no additional software required to decode. Just go to My Computer, right click the dvd drive (with dvd in it ) and click Play. Does this work ?

Only thing stopping it could be if the drive is not recognised as a DVD-rom drive, in which case drivers may be required from the CD.
Can you see the files on the disc though Explorer ?

Region hacks can be had from here. Some require firmware updates, some just software. Depends on the make/model.

never used the thing as a dvd rom.

works flawlessly as a cd rom.

have tried opening files. It knows there is a movie in there as it can read the disk, it just wont play back the film.

am told it is the decoder I need.

a friend has shown me a downloadable decoder for $15 which should solve all the problems. there may well be a hack too for multi region access.

Also, do you have Mediamatics DVDExpress installed ? This is the DVD player software that comes with Thinkpads. We have loads of them here at work. This will be on your Software Selections CD and once installed may solve your problems.

I think perhaps I am missing the media matics program and I dont have the software selections cd you are referring to. I think that may be the problem.

You usually get 2 cd's. One called Product Recovery and one called Software Selections. One white, one silver. The Software Selections disc has all the extras on it.

If you install the DVD software from that disc then upgrade via the link I sent you, you'll be sorted

Just checked, you need the Mediamatics DVD Express video driver which is inastalled as part of the sotware
