Word crashing - can someone explain whats happening?

Ok I have 3 pc's on my desk, one of which is purely setup for printing and scanning. I very rarely turn it on but its setup as the print server for the other 2 pc's.
I have found that if I use Word on the other 2 pc's it crashes if the print server isnt switched on. If the print server is on then Word doesnt crash and works fine.
Why does Word need to have the print server on to work? I know its using the print driver but the print driver is on all 3 pc's.
I know the fix is to have the print server on but what is the underlying reason for Word crashing when the print driver exists on all machines. Surely it shouldnt be necessary to have the print server on just to use Word properly??? Dont understand what the print server holds on top of the driver that Word is going to require?????
Anyone explain this feked up problem?

I have only experienced this problem once, and we have loads of printers set up like this.
The problem was with word crashing (win2000). Re installed the driver on the "server" machine and all worked well

How can the other two print if the printer is attatched to the machine which is switched off! lol come on, self explanitory really.
Print queuing wont initiate if the machine is not switched on. You should leave the print server switched on along with the others if you wish to print. Other than that get a proper print server which utilises an ethernet port on the hub/switch then the "was" print server wont need to be switched on.

Is it self explanatory? Why's that then? Why should it be switched on all the time if he's not going to be printing? Looks like he has no choice! That's just dandy then isn't it, another top quality Microsoft product.

RB5 you muppet read my post again
I am not trying to print! I am just trying to use word to look at docs but it doesnt even open unless the print server is switched on! I should not have to have print server on just to look at files!
And yes it is win2k so looks like another Microsoft bug if others have seen this b4.
Mr bloody clever cloggs learn to read properly
Cheers for the replies

Mr.Clever cloggs lol i'm probably more of a PC newbie than you lot!
Probably because when word loads it looks at the default printer in your case it's not there as you dont switch the printer server (shared device) on!
Seems self explanitory to me :P
Try setting the Print server and other machines to use printer offline, might help?
Oh and i think you can all teach me to read now mmmkayyy!

It still shouldnt need it until you try and print, thats what I dont understand. The printer doesnt have to be there just for the application to load properly!
I been doing support for quite a few years and never seen this b4
It will load the local print driver on the app when the app is opened, it doesnt need a physical connection to the printer for the app to open!!!

Pure supposition here.
Word is of course WYSIWYG. So the setting of the printer are critical to the page layout engine. It is possible that the driver (and the printer) could modify something in the layout that would need to be reflected by Word layout engine.
Word is making a call to the driver which is trying to contact the printer to find the current settings, and the driver isn't responding as expected: Dummy, teddy and bottle come flying out of pram.
Steve, I wasn't going to say anything, but I can't resist. If you hate MS products, and "will never use them" why come onto a thread about Word, other than for a bit of MS bashing? Do you log onto the MS newsgroups for the same purpose?

*yawn*
I read most posts here in case I can help the person. I don't read posts for the sake of it. I wasn't even actually commenting on the original problem, rather I commented on why should one expect these problems to occur (in relation to the "seems obvious to me" parts above) when it's not obvious.
If I've upset you then I'm deeply sorry. Haha.

You haven't upset me at all... I feel the same way about your assertions about MS software that you do about my posts. Boring. That's all.
I don't think there is a person on this forum that doesn't know your view about MS. It is as boring as Pete harping on about gold wheels, but infinately less amusing.

I was yawning at the paragraph you dedicated to yours truly actually, not at you personally. It seems no matter what I say you're only going to have a go, your posts are becoming increasingly aggressive. I'm done on this thread.

B2B you spooning idiot.
how many times have we come across this one.....
word will always try to scan for its default printer.
if its offline, it will error. (The server, that is)
go through the process of installing a local printer to each pc
and defaulting to this.
try it and let me know how you get on....

Bravo,
sorry for hijacking the thread. I don't know the cause but Word is at the top of a big stack of guff when printer hardware / drivers / network subsystems / application engines / document parsers and GUI's get involved. Word does seem to be the most flaky of the Office products - I reckon it's a training ground for the developers.
Steve, thanks for reading on. I wasn't getting aggressive, and apologise if that's how it came across. I just wanted to point out that you can just say "I use Opera, and it's great because x,y and z" or "Why should it [the printer] be switched on all the time if he's not going to be printing?" without the constant snipes. The attacks just undermine your advice by showing lots of bias.

Bravo, like your usual spooning self mate, you are not listening.
the driver has **** all to do with it.
its the fact you are sharing through a server, which word cant work out.
its the same when you try and change the page size to A4 without a printer installed.

MrD, absolutely no offence taken I can't help but put down Microsoft, they've caused me nothing but trouble the past 12 years having spent many a late night having to kludge code because of their broken software. It didn't use to be so bad actually but the Internet has given them more than enough room to screw up at least twice a week
