Question

After downloading and veiwing the 1024 x 768 2003 swrt rally screensaver my computer froze.

Upon rebooting and logging back in many icons had lost the proper graphic and appeared as blue outlined white boxes... I checked further and found that the whole of C:\Program Files directory had disappeared. Everything else seemed to still be there.

I have currently set up the machine on an old hard drive hoping to find out if this is a virus or not and if possible to recover the original hard drive to its former glory System restore would not work (WinME)

Thanks

Mick

Didn't your AV software pick it up?

Go on, tell us you haven't got any AV installed

Where did you download it from?

AV software is from grisoft. Also was stored in C:\Program Files folder.

Screensaver was downloaded from the swrt.com site. I don't know if there is a connection or even if it was a virus but I can't think of anything else...

I have now re-downloaded the AV software can I connect my opriginal hard drive as a slave and get it checked with the AV software now?

If it's OK or if it gets cleaned is there a good downloadable uninstall type programme which might be able to recover the lost folders and files????

Ta

Hmm if your files and the folder they were in has been deleted i dont think that you could get it back unless you use a data recovery company to do so. I'd just re-insall the OS

Virus checked it now - no sign of any problems!!!

Attacked with 'Drive rescue' found loads of clusters with deleted files in but can't save them to disk!!! Arrrgh

I know this sounds silly, but are you sure you havn't accidentally moved the folder? I have seen it done before, and have done it myself by being a bit hasty with the mouse and drag/dropping it elsewhere. Try doing a search for it.

Failing that it might have been corruption in the File Allocation Table....

ajm - yes I did think of that. I did a search of the hard drive and checked the Recycle bin... just in case
