What are the legal implications of this and exactly how much information can the "boss" get from it?
Our boss has gone away this week and has turned it on. Everything is working slowly and it's a pain.
I am concerned that I have been into my personal email at lunchtime and he may have my passwords etc.
Thanks - ChrisB, you'll probably know this, don't know why I don't just email you!
And before anyone mentions my inadequecies, **** off!

Oh, BTW, I have access to the server at work, but I think he's set this up from his own PC. Apparently, one of my colleagues had ALL of his email being forwarded to him - that is until I turned it off!

Using an IDS system or a netowrk sniffer (or some spyware) it is possible to get all information that is not encrypted....this includes
POP3 userids & passwords
FTP userids & passwords
E-Mails, downloaded files, everywhere you've been.
Legally he's quite within his rights to monitor the network & if he finds something 'suspect' then he can act on it....He can't use that information to gain access to your personel e-mail accounts however....
Don't ever send anything via an e-mail that you wouldn't be prepared to write on a postcard...and remember that it is the companies network/internet connection not yours.

Yeah legally he can do what he likes, but if he's monitoring then the company has to tell its staff they're doing so PRIOR to doing anything, this is usually put in your contract.
As usual I'm not a lawyer etc.
Steve.
