How is it possible that manufacturers are allowed to get away with charging what they do ?
it must be an even more profitable enterprise then apple themselves
its cheaper to keep buying refurb ( open box ) whole units with ink cartridge supplied than to buy ink refills , and just skip the old one
just how enviromental is that !

My mate just buys a new printer.
You can pick them up for about £30 (printer, scanner, copier, fax - all in one). To buy a set of cartridges is about £40
So he will just buy a printer and when it runs out of ink, throw it away and buy another

Apparently not, its just a wicked rumour. When you think, they cost only a few pence to make anyway - to get the machine to only fill a few half way would cost to much to do, so they just get the machine to make them all the same.

Actually they do come with "starter" cartridges. These can be physically smaller and don't hold much ink. It's not that they're only partly full. When it's time to buy a replacement, it is possible to buy more starter cartridges but generally you'll find the high capacity or XL cartridges for sale in the shops. These hold alot more ink but cost alot more.
Even printers (inkjet and laser) leased on a commercial basis come with starter cartridges and subsequent cartridges sent from the supplier (as part of the lease agreement) are the high capacity cartridges.

Thanks this maybe what I'll end up doing.
Mean time I've spent tenner on a syringe , black cyan magenta and yellow (100ml each) to fill cartridges
And so far it's worked

One of the biggest scams going and for a while now !
I remember years ago when the cartel between printer manufacturers was exposed and all of them were slapped with a directive to stop this practice of closing down printers if it detects oem inks, setting the ink levels to be reporting low when in fact they were not by quite a large margin etc. All done by the chip in the cartridge. Did they do anything about it ? did they ****
So still it continues today, some are worse than others (HP and Epson)
