Default Can Anyone Recommend a Cheapish Reliable NAS Cloud Unit?

This is so I can run Windows and OSX on my Mac - to share files/folders between the two they need to be a different drive (not even a partition on the internal drive - silly computers) so thought a NAS would be a good move forward to keep in with the times, and would be nice to pick up my music anywhere in the world! (or rather on my macbook in the kitchen )

So, was looking at the Western Digital Cloud Book think 3TB, but the reviews on Amazon arent great.

I have looked at Synology which seems possibly the best bet, but when including two new drives, it gets a bit pricey.

Anyone got any good solutions/ideas? or are selling a unit?

Cheers y'al

Im going to have either a dual boot using boot camp, or I may use paralells, undecided as yet.

Ideally, I wanted to partition the drive then whichever OS i was in I could pick up the files from the partition. However it turns out, the fils would only be READ only.

So

They don't have to read only on osx as you can get a app to make ntfs read and write , I
Run windows in a parallels and works flawlessly and this is on a 2010 MacBook Pro

I have a nas and this is how I do it and I get full access to all the the files

Thanks dude.

So ok, are you saying, I can

partition my internal hard drive, lets say

Partition

A - Parallels
B - OSX
C - Media and Documents

I can read and write to anything in the C drive in either Parallels or OSX? with that app?

You won't need to partition anything , parallels is an app you install in osx then you install windows through the app.

Windows then will run whilst osx is running . Media and document s will all be saved in your user directory on osx

Are you definitely sure this will work, as all the Mac buffs I have spoken to on the Mac forums said it wont work!

So I can say have a word doc in my 'stuff' folder (which is now in the OSX directory), I can open this word doc with parallels edit it, resave it, then open it again with Word (mac version) in OSX and do the same?

This is with this app I presume?

This looks ace. Thanks man.

What spec is your system? Mine is the new slim 3.2ghz, but I have upgraded the RAM to 16gb as I thought I may be installing Parallels, no problems with speed or anything?

Its not something I do, but I just out of interest, have your tried games in parallels?

So you have experienced no problems with the software and its interaction?

Is it the free version of that app you use? Although I am a bit of a tech nerd, I kinda just want to fit and forget these days, is that what it does? theres no 'up keep' or problems that need fixing?

is that parallels 9 you have there?

My spec is 2.4 core 2 duo ,8gb ram , 128gb SSD then i replaced the CD drive with a 640gb HDD for storage

yes its parallels 9

as for games , that'll be a no no .

Maybe I have missed something here but if you format your NAS volumes correctly (EXT3-4) you can read and write from both a windows PC and Mac ?

I have a QNAP Turbo NAS and I can see the shares from both my macs and PC's
I can also read and write to the shares

Windows

Mac

You are right Tony, but Ant pointed out I didnt need to purchase a NAS unit to do what I wanted to do, the NAS was only my thoughts as at the time i didnt think it was possible to ready and write from the internal hard drive to OSX and Paralells Windows

that is a basic task, sharing folders across the OS, quite easy to do in fact

But didn't you say you also wanted to access your files/stuff externally ?

Accross both OS's ? OSX and paralells - they will only read, and not write so im told by the MAc 'gurus'?

The external stuff was just a bonus really of buying a NAS but ideally I just wanted to be able to read and write the same set of files through both OS's

I am using the 2TB version for all my videos and music which works with everything on my network (PC's and Android) not sure about Mac's as I haven't tried it but says it is Mac compatible.

Thanks buddy, that was the original unit I was looking at, however it had more bad feedback that good on Amazon so I think I opted, if I do go for one, to go for a Synology NAS

I don't use the included software which is the main issue, attached to a Gb network it is lightning fast

WD My Book Live Personal Cloud Storage 2 TB Network Attached Storage: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories WD My Book Live Personal Cloud Storage 2 TB Network Attached Storage: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Is the older version I use, gets much better feedback.

Yeah thats the drive with all the problems Ive read about, but yeah could be software related...i might just avoid it and save the extra and get the Synogloy , dont wont something that could stop working at any given time!

thanks for your thoughts though bud

Synology units are superb. Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android - even the staunchest of fans in all those camps can all agree that Synology units are blooming marvellous.
