Thinners would be too corrosive. If the car had any decent protection on it then the paint should come off fairly easily. T-Cut would be my first option.

Alocohol wipes are your friend! We use them at work on cars that come in that have been vandalised with paint.

Polishing isn't the best way to remove overspray, as it results in unnecessary paint removal; claying with an aggressive clay bar is a far better option, and is likely to work well as the fresh paint will be uncured and so relatively soft.

Further thought; a strong tar & glue remover may also help no end, as the one we favour (Autosmart Tardis) will dissolve uncured paint. Thus, it may be possible to remove a lot of it quite easily.
