Cool

No, most of them don't get it/understand all the fuss/are not interested in cars.

Great!

Question

Has anyone lost any "mates" after buying a Scoob because of jealousy? Has happened to me and wonder if it's a common thing.

Steve.

Nope.

But then I make sure those types of "mates" don't stick around for long.

This one I'd been mates with since school, I thought he was one of my best. Apparently not ! I was very surprised.

How can you lose what you don't have?

Seriously, have got to know a lot of good people through ScoobyNet / SIDC meets and runs though.

Didn't lose any friends, but some neighbours stopped talking to me; they were a strange bunch anyway - owned Rovers and Escorts and things... I moved.

I don't want to sound like you mum, but if you lose their friendship over a car, were they ever a friend?

I have friends that earn a lot more than me, and a lot less, but they are still friends! The car is a side issue!

I found people are normally car/bike/boat people or football people! And sometimes (but rarely, both)

Most of my friends are car/bike/boat people, so they appreciate the car, rather than be jealous of it!

I consider DrEvil a friend, so is that both sides of the coin??? My God he is taking over the world!!!

Few of the guys who live in my close own high end Motorbikes so appreciate it, but got a bit jealous when I shoved a new back box on, they thought they were the only ones who could rev loudly and **** everybody in the neighbourhood, how wrong they were. Most of my good mates complement me.

Strange thing is, that you can also find people you knew before!!

I use to chat to a guy on AOL (I know I'm a sad geek!) about cars 5 years ago, and we lost touch. I think in Decemeber last year we met by accident at the Surrey meet, and we both have been driving Scoobs for over two years!!!

Small world!! The worse thing is that his name is Nito!!

Yeah, I was rather spooked when I virtually bumped into Cyprus Charlie, who I'd got on well with on holiday in Cyprus...

Then Adam M, who turned out to be a friend of a friend from University...

Small world.
But I wouldn't like to paint it.

Oh, and I've only gained friends from the Scooby community, not lost one.

Yep, I've lost a couple, cos they hate driving anywhere with me, especially if they're trying to follow

But I've met a whole load of people, not enuff days in the week to socialise!

Lost none but gained a few.

Some of the sad neighbours have become further detatched as I have upgraded; no loss there.

Since the P1 arrived have had nothing but positive reaction from all sorts:

- ` elderly ` gent giving an enthusiastic thumbs up !

- teenagers offering congratulations !

- young kids agog !

Cheers

It's just a car for Christ's sake, why would any friends be bothered about what you have bought?

I Have a mate who has always critisised my choice of car as impracticle, but even he (oil burner lover) liked the Scooby.

But it is still just a car!

I dunno, I mean it's not as though these cars are very expensive. Any Tom,Dick or Harry can go out and buy an Impreza !

My 01 car is possibly the cheapest car on my street at the moment..........the fastest but still the cheapest.

Alot of my friends earn roughly what I earn and some are into cars some aren't. A few poeple I've know asked "How did you buy that ?".........guys who own a couple of houses or boats or go abroad 5 or 6 times a year !!

I'm not bothered about it, just thought it was really weird that someone could be so immature at 30 odd years old!

Steve,

Are you sure it's jealousy?? Did he say as much??

Or was it that you had slept with his wife/girlfriend (or both!!) ????

As Jim Morrison sang "People are strange"!

When I was looking at getting another car I was looking at an A4 2.8 quattro, which he was quiet enthusiastic about and it didn't bother him. Then I went to look at my current MY98 turbo and he got a bit weird with me, starting offering me loads of advice then saying I "snubbed it" when I didn't reply to his mail. When I eventually bought said Turbo I endured a few days worth of mail from him and his girlfriend (not that it was any of her business; telling me I'd be bored of it in 6 months time (which I most certainly am not!)). He really wanted an Impreza Turbo so I can only put it down to jealousy, which is pathetic.

Andy, I don't find his girlfriend particularly attractive

Steve.

A mate (or so called mate) got a bit arsey when I got the Scoob. He was always boasting about his 1.8 Cavalier beating my 1.6 Megane. I turned up in the Scoob and he followed (or tried to follow) me to a pub. He wasn't best pleased when I touched the gas and left him standing. And no its wasn't a fancy high power pull away either

Ever since then you mention cars and he grimaces!!

Cool

Might not always be jealousy though - depends what has happened. i.e. does he slag you off, or do you just not see him much??

As an example, I earn (when I have a job ) about a 5th of the salaries that friends of mine are on. This makes it difficult as our lifestyles are very different. I have to budget for everything, and save heavily for things which they take for granted. Even things like car mods can take me months to save for.

It becomes difficult to attend events, socialise etc as you always struggle whereas they have no probs financially. This leads to vast lifestyle differences and losing contact - something that has happened to me.

Now this is not me being jealous - I enjoy my life and would NOT swap with any of them, and I also admire them for the position they are in. It is just hard though, especially if like us you start off years back on the same level.

Going back to the Scoob thing, you need money to run one, and if you can run one (and mod it) then you wont need to worry about other things in life. I guess it is just different lifestyles, and the fact we all go our own ways eventually

i do not own an scooby (as you might of guested from my user name) but since i bought my evo 6 4 months ago every time i go to the pubs/clubs in town i always seam to get held up talking to people that claim to know me and my car but i have never seen them before in my life.
as for my mates they love my car almost as much as i do and love going out in it and beeing seen in it.
my best mate only just earns a bit more a month than i speen in petrol in a month .
i have also had a couple (manly young lads) shout across to me when i have been in town in the car that i must have a rich dad as they donet like the idea of a 22 year old having a brand new performace car of his own and still beeing able to afford a night out when there dole money only streches to a couple of bottles of cider a week.

Not lost any friends through the scooby, but people have misconception that it is a vastly expensive car. People at work often say, oh you would have scooby, working in IT? And then comment that they couldn't afford one... Now my car is worth well under £10k and many of their cars are newer/dearer, but still they hold this opinion, my boss could believe it when I told him that a new one only costs the same as his 318SE cost!!!

Agree with Dream weaver , sometimes people just drift apart and cash can often be the cause of this, as he said you just start leading different lifestyles, maybe bigger houses in new areas etc.

i had two best friends one i have not seen for 2 years now, nothing happened as such just moved job and area.

the other guy is totally different from me i probably earn 6 times more than him and i really dont think he could care less, we dont see each other as often as when we were kids but that just aint possible. im no better than him cause of it.

we also change as we get older life problems and reality set in and we all get problems that for most of us just dont exsist when young and carefree.

way to deep !

any way he should be jelious you own the best car money can buy !

Hi m8, dont know bout losing friends, come across alot of jelous gits though. my problem is my girlfriend! she is jelous of a car sad eh? i have had sum nice motors but when we went to look at my new scoob at the show room cheeky mare said i would be embarrssed to be picked up in that, i sai theres plenty who will! i cant clean it in piece , had it colour coded on the skirts and put sum P1 alloys on and i cant even have that last glance in piece as i walk away from it. we have a little girl of 14 months, perfect 4 doors good boot space and child safety locks. then her mother got involved, that was it 4 me, we split 4 2 months but now she has accepted my mica blue scoob and moved back, so stand your ground lads!
