2004 wrx, rear backing plate cut off due to rust, do i need to replace??

 

Nope. Clean up and hammerite all raw edges.

 

I didn't even bother running backing plates on the front when I upgraded to Brembos on my impreza. Never caused a problem in all the years I had them.

Apologies for the thread hijack but my backing plate has just exploded!
Heard a crunch followed by a grinding noise,pulled over to find half of the backing plate missing and the rest of it wrapped around the caliper.

bpr has answered one of my questions,i can run without it for a bit until i get parts sorted

My car is a v3sti and has 6 speed 2001 jdm plus gold 2 pot rear brembo,would it be the 266mm backing plate i would need,the conversion was done when i bought the car so not sure if rear diff,hubs,discs etc will have been changed?

Would have thought you had this backing plate (or LHS version) on your car. Have a look at the other side and check that the backing plate looks correctly sized for the discs you have on the car. If the backing plate looks way too small, then they may have left your old classic plates on there. Would have thought not as they touch the discs unless bent out of the way.

 

I think you may find you have a conversion kit like this on your hubs?

If so, you might well still be using the far too small backing plates from the classic.


If they changed the hubs too then you will have the larger backing plate as per my post above.

 

If it's a v3 sti with DCCD and a r180 rear diff the conversion kit won't fit the v4-6 will so I would say some ones changed the hubs.

Not much of my dust guard left,can't understand why it broke

 

 

The discs are about 320mm and doesn't seem to have conversion kit,I must have newage hubs then.
Would it be likely the diff is newage too or would the v3 diff be compatible with the 2001 box?

 

The discs will be 316mm but you creeping into a minefield with this one. You need to get the gearbox number of the box above starter and see what ratio your front diff is. Personally I would cut them off and over the shoulder with them their good for f**k all. If your brembos bolt directly to your hubs someone has changed the hubs. Then you've the handbrake shoe dilemma 170mm for r160 diff 190mm for r180 diff. Don't torture yourself if everything's running ok and cut them off

 

Haha cheers joe,I've tried finding out what exact box,no sticker and was told it's a 2001 bugeye sti jdm.
I'm pretty sure the v3sti came with r180 so maybe that's still standard?
Like you say I will just remove the other dust cover and run without

 

A v3 sti if it used to have DCCD will be r180 with 4.444 rear diff ratio and 1 to 1 drop gears in the tail casing so this is where it starts to get interesting. UK car has 1.1 to 1 drop gears and a different ratio diff front and rear. Leave well alone. Throw them in the scrap believe me someone's done the hard work for you

 

It's not an RA but just a v3sti,never came with DCCD,I've always thought that all the v3sti came with r180,guess it doesn't really matter for now,if I have any problems in the future I think you can tell an r160 from an r180 from the casing/bolts,ive never used launch control but was going to have a play so might be handy to get some spare drive shafts so would need to find the correct ones.

 

It'll be r160 4.444 then so at least shafts will be handier got

 

If my current 6 speed is a jdm 2001 then the info is its 3.900 final drive but my car came with 4.444 as standard this is what's confusing me,if this was the case then would it need to run the 2001 diff?

 

Well it wouldn't have to be a 2001 diff just the correct ratio. Now its getting awkward cause either diff front or rear could have been changed to suit the tail case on the box cause it could be 1.1 or 1.1/1 you have a bit of an unknown quantity there and unless you want to start counting teeth in front and rear diff your not going to be any wiser. As said before if its driving ok and goes round tight corners without binding leave well alone and throw them silly tin backing plates in the skip
