I used to drive a 1998 impreza sti and it was very fast but I thought the handling was
not as good as I was led to believe.
dont get me wrong there was plenty of grip going round corners but when I was weaving in and out of traffic it was not nearly as sharp as my civic type R as in the civic is like lightning when nipping in and out of traffic.
I came up against a blue turbo 2000 a couple of weeks ago on a very twisty country back road
and I was on his backside the whole way he could not pull away no matter how hard the guy was trying.
I understand that a STi is alot faster than a turbo 2000 so I would not of done so well against one of those but I am much happier in the type R than I ever was in my impreza Sti
EDIT - I am just waiting for tommy to give me the whole civic torque routine LOL
not as good as I was led to believe.

The whole my STI is better than your WRX is a bit like saying my girlfriend is better looking than yours! Strip them down and they are not that different ; )
STI owners like their cars and WRX owners like theirs simple.
When I got my WRX PPP is was based primarily on two simple points (1) it was some £2k cheaper than a 'standard' STI of the same age and mileage and give or take just as fast and (2) it didn't have the chavvy STI wing on the boot and the girly pink badges...
The £2k that I saved bought a cheap run around and a nice holiday. I've never looked back!!

I started with an 03 wrx ppp wagon and I remember very well what I gained and what I lost when I replaced the TD04/prodrive exhaust with a VF34/ MILTEK 3" exhaust. I gained top end but lost the fun element of the td04, very quick from tickover at traffic lights and a match for most in the first couple of hundred metres.

the sti is a faster and a very different car than the wrx and anyone following the well trodden wrx path with sti bolt-ons would find they were 20hp down on the sti, like for like.

I am pretty amazed what the 2 litre vtec can produce even without a turbo
with my reflashed ecu the vtec engages sooner at 5200 rpm and it does not stop until the rev needle is bouncing off 9000 rpm
this is the second ep3 type R I have owned and this one is so much faster than my last one and my last one was very fast.
the turbo 2000 will have a very big advantage in the wet with the 4 wheel drive tho
I still like impreza's as well as the note from an impreza's exhaust is the best burble out of any car I have heard

the sti has variable valve timing too, unlike the wrx
