Well it's been about 18 months since last update and I've finally got round to doing the 6 speed coversion that I've been thinking about for years. I was worried it would take away some of the cars characteristics that the super close ratio gearbox gives but looking to go forged and run more power soon it had to be done. Along with a Stage 2 clutch, RCM Lightweight Flywheel and Rear Brembo conversion and suspention upgrade bits. I rounded up the parts and booked it in with Rich at FB Tuning to work his magic.
Low mileage Hawkeye DCCD 6 speed Box
RCM 6 speed Lightweight flywheel
Compatition Stage 2 kevlar clutch kit
R180 Driveshafts
Rear hubs / Brembo conversion
Whiteline 24mm adj Rear ARB
Whiteline ARB Mounts
CDF Racing F/R Droplinks
H brace
Rich soon had it all fitted and the car was ready for collection. I was a slightly worried about how grabby the new clutch would be with the Lightweight flywheel but there was no need to be. It was just as I'd hoped, not far off stock but with a nice positive engagement and no judder, got used to it within a few drives. I could definitely notice the easier rev pick up from the new Flywheel and less understeer from the ARB etc. The gear ratio's are now spot on and no more sitting at 4500k revs at 75mph.
Overall I'm really happy with the Modifications and how it's transformed the car also have the peace of mind knowing I wanted to run more power in the near future.

Well it's been 7 years since my last update post. I'm happy to say after 14 years of ownership I'm still the proud owner of my Type R. It's spent most the winters tucked up in a heated garage and gets use on nice weekends doing about 1.5k miles per year. Nothing worse than a car sat not being driven for years on end.
In my last post 7 years ago I mentioned about maybe going forged and running more power. Well a couple of years ago I fitted a Brand new forged bottom end, reconditioned heads, bigger turbo and injectors. Now running 430bhp it really is all car I ever wanted it to be. 10 years ago it was different but now with all these modern hot hatches with 300/400bhp plus it was time to take my subaru to the next level to keep up with modern performance cars.
The original V3 STI had an open deck block so the 1st step was importing a new semi closed fully forged STI short block crate motor from Subaru Japan. I wasn’t looking at running huge laggy undrivable power so went with the following:
*Turbo Dynamics / Lateral performance MD321t billet ball bearing turbo, quick spool good for 450 bhp+
*New 750cc injectors
*RCM extreme headstuds
*RCM high pressure Fuel pump
*RCM uprated Oil pump
*RCM baffled sump
*RCM track attack Oil catch can
*RCM Exhaust Headers
*RMC uprated Engine and Gearbox mounts
*Harvey trick Up pipe
*H&S wide mouth 3" Down pipe.
*H&S sport exhaust, quite
*H&S group n exhaust, loud
*Fully professionally reconditioned heads.
*SPA Oil temp/pressure gauge
*GT2 Front mount intercooler
* k&N induction with cold air feed
*Apexi PFC + com
Before.
After.
Professionally built and tuned by Richard at FB Tuning. For a car that weights less than 1300kg it really does now pull very well through the gears. I also modified a P1 spotlight cover into a cold air intake going through the wing to the cone filter. I can easily swap it back over if I wanted.
Next up the alloy wheels could do with a referb so have that booked in next week, also a change of colour is needed me thinks. Pictures to follow when there done.

This was always one of my favourite cars on here, especially back when I owned my Type R. I always remember it having the OEM optional STI cage and being really tastefully modified.
Nice to see you still have the car and are continuing to enjoy it. Was it one of the new thick walled VAB shortblocks you went with?

Thanks for the positive comments. It really has been a pleasure keeping, looking after and driving this car for the past 13 years. Took it out over the weekend for the first time in a while and didn’t miss a beat. Had an Oil change service at FB Tuning last week with FUCHS Titan Race Pro oil and Subaru JDM black OEM Oil filter. Next up I need to raise the suspension a little as it's sunken a bit over the years. Original orange indicators are going back on also, just for a slight change. Possibly back to Original bonnet scoop but can't decide?
like I mentioned previously the wheels were due a freshen up so booked it in with my local referb shop 'Plannet Wheels' who done an amazing job powder coating them BBS gold. I wouldn't say they look loads better than the original grey but after so many year of ownership it makes a very nice change. Just need to get the centre caps back and fitted now.
