Interesting. I definitely do have a transponder.

I popped into my local key cutter. They have a AD900 advanced diagnostics transponder duplicating system. I found some info about it here http://www.advanced-diagnostics.co.uk/pdf/AD900Pro.pdf

They can sometimes change transponder codes but surprise surprise mine is locked!!

They sell transponder keys @ retail £70 but they do not have key fob functionality.

According to this guy I need a TPX2 transponder chip that I found on line here http://www.jiutech.net/product_390.html

Unfortunately it is too big to fit inside my key.

So I'm waiting for my mapper to call back and see what he can tell me.

If he can make it work then for the sake of an extra hundred quid or so (over the Subaru key price) I'll go for a remap at the same time!!!

ta!

Here is a question for everyone. Why the bleeding hell do shoe repairers always cut keys as well? What's going on there?

The key cutters machines only tend to write to their own transponders.
But that's just because they clone onto the chips, maybe they can only be written on them once. But what a mapper will do is allow the ECU to accept the new chip, whether or not it can take two different coded chips, I don't know. Drop Jolly Green Monster a PM, he will know for sure.

Im sure i read in my handbook that the key has a variable code transponder for extra secuity.

Yep, if you are right about the mappers and the ECU then this is the way to go for sure.

I found the users guide for the machine above. They can write to certain types of transponder many times ...

... the key guy was hopefull of tweaking my transponder but it is stiched up (he said it was sneaky of them the way they did it)?

One mode of operation tells you whether the transponder is new or used.

It all seems very complicated. I'm almost tempted to try to look for a machine on eBay and mess around for sh its and giggles.

It is no wonder that thieves have taken to breaking and entering to get keys!!!!

I reckon it is worth leaving a dummy set near the front door that will open the car but not start it!

That will make the fu ckers scratch their heads.

Ahhh well. There are different kinds of transponders. Active & passive. Some take batteries and others like these have little antennas that work a little RFID tags.

Variable code for the alarm and locks maybe?

The mistake I made last night when I was all and whatever was not separating out the locking / alarm functions from the immobiliser. It seems the two are separate and work in different ways!

Spoke to Bob Rawle who confirmed that he can program the ECU to accept transponders during a remap.

Now I just need figure out the metal work. How do you get the metal part changed without fooking the rest of the key? Anyone?

You can't. The key blade is L-shaped, so it messes the key up when it comes out. If you don't mind a bit of glueing here and there it might be ok.

But... on the 1st page I posted a blank key shell. so you get that, have the key cut/copied from your old, and swap out all the innards.
