I only have one key, with no remote buttons for it - again, the cat1 alarm has remote open / lock etc, and need another key.

Is there a way of doing this, and not needing to code it?

Timpsons in town have said they can cut a key (they have nissan blanks I think, which are useable they said), and programme it if needed, but the coding is the expensive part, so if I can do away with it, that would be cool.
Ooooh you are well beyond my experience here. Wouldn't know where to start on this one mate, sorry!

If it was factory fresh I'd say you start with identifying the Key type and then the type of immobiliser fitted. Then it's a matter of doing some Google leg work... which I would be happy to help with.

But all bets are off after modifications!!

FWIW I have read in plenty of other places though that Nissan and Subaru blanks are interchangeable!

On my RB320 ive got a little pullout keyboard just above the bonnet relese. Im sure i read in the handbook that you can program new keys in with it. Is it just Hawks have this?

Sorry to break the news Westwood, all you have done so far is programmed to the Sigma immobiliser/central locking. So with the new key, you still won't be able to start as it wont immobilise the subaru immob. Its hard coded to the ECU, and as mentioned a mapper will have to re-code.

Hmmm you had me going so I just popped out and tried a few things. I'm totally convinced that this time you are incorrect.

I took the guts out of the good key so it is basically only a metal key. No electronics at all and took the "new ebay" key that I just programmed.

I remote opened the car with the "new ebay" key. Waited for 30 seconds or so for the dash LED to extinguish and then put in the gutted old key. When I turned it nothing happened except for the fuel pump priming.

Then I pressed the button on the "new ebay" key. There was a click, and then when I turned the old gutted key she fired up...

One of us is missing something???

did you have the old guts close to the ignition barrel ?
the old ford immob chips used to work if near the barrel, even if not in the key

or maybe the transponder chip is still hiding in the old key somewhere?

mine will not turn over if i leave it for that long, and have to use the fob button to get it to work again

just a thought

Yeah, with you on that. i have had cars the same in the past.

In answer to your question, Nope. The guts were left in the kitchen.... if you look inside your key you will see it is obviously just a battery and circuit board.

Nothing to misread.

I'm good to go. Just the metal work to sort out.

However, it occurred to me reading a post above... perhaps other cars are wired differently... especially non UK cars?

My JDM STI 5 is different. It looks just like a P1 immobilizer from the outside (3rd party install). But while the key remote opens the doors, only the key fob remobilizes the car...

But for a factory standard MY04 UK WRX.... this procedure totally works.

Maybe I was lucky. Makes a fuc king change in this game I tell you!

So was it the little keyboard that programs the key ?

the keyboard will reprogram the key for the alarm
but will reset all keys, so you have to have all of your keys and do them one after the other

it seems for Westwood its done everything, although its not what ive been led to believe before, (usually the dealer expensive bit is recoding all the keys to the immobiliser on the ecu)

either way its worth ago if u have a spare key, worst case you will have a keyfob that at least opens the doors and turns off the alarm
best case i guess u end up a happy chappy like westwood and save a wedge.

Westwood, did you still have the old key/transponder on your person when you started with the new key? Because they only have to be close by to the receiver loop that is around the ignition barrel.
If you did, I suggest giving it ago while the old key/transponder is in the house, or outside of the car.

EDIT: Ignore me, just re-read and you've already answered that. Does your car have a turbo timer?

No it looks like its there, although pic is a little dark. Its a black peice of hard plastic, like an odd triangle sort of shape. It'll be stuck in well. Top left.

Just see if you can remove that rectangle to the left, behind the battery terminal. I know I said triangle before, doh.

Well that looks suspiciously like a bit of technology snuck in there to me.... I missed it last week!

When I said earlier I took all the guts out, I meant this bit:

I hadn't spotted the bit of plastic before... It is well stuck in there... I don't think I can remove it without bending and maybe damaging it.

Back to the drawing board?

Yep, that's the transponder. It'll just have a bit of sticky stuff on one side, but its pretty hard, so you won't break it pulling it out.

But you now have TWO of those don't you, one for your car, one in the new key? If so, you are half way there, just have a mapper re-code the new one for you.

your right mate there is another chip in the keyfob right next to the blade a tiny black piece you need to have programmed for the car to start and run

aye it was one reason i stopped where i was, as well as i couldnt think of a decent way to rebuild the key with the new key blade
as a spare key im happy to have the keyfob and key blade seperate i guess

o well its another reason to get my car remapped too
