iOS 4
Well my iphone 3G definately felt sluggish after the ios4 update. Switching between apps was slow, text screen takes ages to appear and overall it felt like I had poured some treacle over the processor.
Battery life however has not got worse so okay for me in that respect.
Folders were nice and unified mail box plus the ability to have more than one exchange account
Now on the iphone 4, it just works soooooooooooo much nicer

Hi Jack,
I've got 3 pop accounts set up on the phone. Push is turned off completely, so it only checks them when I load the email program up and refresh. I've checked the multitaking, and nothing is running (except the text messaging app).

I already did. The original update screwed up royally, and I ended up having to connect the phone to another machine to get it working. This restored the phone to factory settings (with ios4). The battery started draining faster from that point.

Loaded up iOS4 first thing this morning. 9 month old 32gb 3GS.
Not used my phone much today - played with a few apps - sent a few texts (super fast) and it has now got down to 83%. So it has used 17% in nine hours of standby and 55 minutes of use.
Overall it 'feels' faster and so far there is nothing that seems slower or does not work as expected!
All good with a few nice updated features.

Just on battery life...
...since last full charge - 3 hours 13 minutes useage, 23 hours 6 minutes standby...
...has used 62% of charge.
I think that is better than it was before. Location services are ON. Push is not.

I picked up my iPhone 4 on Thursday evening and I have to say that I impressed by the new OS, everything is just a lot smoother, quicker and more pleasant to use.
I had an iPhone 3G before that and I had installed OS4 and I did notice a very slight effect on speed on some apps but nothing that would make me want to go back to the old OS.
Battery life on my old and new iPhone's was fine and if anything I would say that battery life is improved on the iPhone 4, I like the new features and especially the still / video camera functions.
Also has anyone noticed how much quicker Safari is? I am still getting a good 3G signal but the pages load / refresh a lot quicker than before.

Loaded IOS4 on my 16gb iPod Touch at the weekend, And the battery life went from 3 days light use to completely dead on standby after a few hours !!
Settings were the same before the update , Turned notifications off ( Also turned anything else off I can think off )and battery life as improved somewhat but still not as good as before.

As it stands, the original iPhone (2G) isn't supported by iOS4 - and I can imagine that iOS4 will be the last version supported by the 3G (as I agree, it's sluggish!)
iOS5 will be 3GS and upwards only, you can almost bet your life on it...
