Don't feed the trolls

I'm very fortunate (through hard work, nothing else) to have the means to buy pretty much any car I please - as you can see from the list of previous. As I said in the post, for MY needs and for ME, it's the best combination of box-ticks and ownership / driving experience out there. Otherwise I'd own/drive whatever the other option was.

Okay? Is that clear enough for you?

Also mine is not the diesel, it's the twin-turbo 335i petrol model.

I drove to the Alps in my Saxo VTR - it got snowed in, I pulled it out and drove almost non stop to Calais without any issues - and that included driving down the icey 21 Alpe d'Huez hairpins. So I reckon you can get most places in most cars if you're careful.
Part of our driveway (semi grassed) can get very muddy - the 3er has not struggled yet. In fact the inlaws X5 slips more.

Ed - I tried to point out that yours was the 335i but it wasn't noticed.

To be honest I think both have stronger points in different areas (i - noise, rev range, straighline pace, d - better range, mighty torque, easier to drive possibly) but both are simply damn good allrounders.

There's no way I'll be taking my 911 out in the snow - even if it is 4wd.
I'll use my pick-up for that, thanks.

We usually use our Jimny if the weather is terrible - the Scandies love them because they weigh naff all yet have a proper low range 'box and decent clearance.

The British just think they are a bit gay. A few Greenlaning missions in ours say otherwise...! Dreadful for any distance driving though.

People in the know in GB know how good Jimny's are off road.

Just try and find one cheap enough to mod for off-roading. (and they DO need some cheap mods to make really good mud-pluggers, but nothing expensive)

When I used to do off-roading there were loads of them about.

Best fun I had in snow was back in the 90's driving my dads Sherpa van, power slides all the way.

bizzarely enough I had a T4 vw camper which had a full set of snow tyres on it when I bought it.

I bought it from a pornographer, who had had to install them from when he moved to Sweden........ no chains allowed and no salt gritting of the road.

I have never had such a strange day in my life, when I went to view the van and went into his studio. We're talking chains, rubber/leather, bondage, frames, gas masks, gimp masks the full works.

anyway the van was chuffing great in the snow. put the snow tyres on in winter, alloys in the spring.

actually all this 4 x 4 snow talk is nonsense, what I actually do when its snowing, is mtb to work....... you can't stop muppets sliding into you in a car etc

Austin - comedy!

Zip - ours is standard but has done some pretty serious off roading. It's stick a sump guard, raise it a little and put better tyres on if we were really into it.

Inlaws used their for the Lands End trial - it did pretty well. Trouble is it's 2WD only so they had to disable the front wheels!

iv just realised the 5 series 3l diesel (227hp) is essentially the same weight as a 3 series "3.3"l diesel

- thats the weight of the extra turbo i guess
