Just watching the touring cars as I write.

Quite entertaining (but not as much as rally, but more than F1 IMHO)

Just got me thinking.......

Why do certain manufacturers support Rally, some F1, some Touring cars???

Looking at some of the motors here, would a well sorted scooby or evo do well against these tourers? (assuming same driver skill).

These seem to be the cars to beat at present....

Can we seriously say that a sorted astra is better than a sorted scoob/evo?

BTW I have my flamesuit ready

Hi

I have just finished watching it too, some good races. Shame there are so few BTCC cars out there.....cant wait for more manufacturers joining in. If scoobs and evos were to be entered would they be given weight penelties because of their 4wd?

Might have problems with regs 'cos of the turbo

Mind you, put a Sport in there...

There is an unofficial Brands Indy laptime by Pete Croney in his *sorted* RA that is similar to Phil Bennett - 49 seconds. At the same very damp venue in November, DocJock & I were doing 1.05 average on road tyres Can't wait for November & hope its dry

BTW - did you see me on the Telly? I was on the infield taking pics

in answer to your question on why btcc?
it all comes down to the marketing department and where they best see their product being advertised and in what part of the world.Classic here would be volvo boxy but nice and wear a peaked cap..put it in the btcc and suddenly you have very quick image and safe and people wanting to buy who would not normally be seen dead in a volvo.
e.g. bmw enter touring cars because thats where they think their sort of buyers will like to be associated with. Peugot similarly..what they want to do is make mr sales rep in his bog std car feel like jason plato.(even if he drives like jason donovan)having said all that its often at the whim of the marketing exec. eg if he likes circuit racing or it'll advance his/her career in some way thats where he'll spend his budget.Having said that all compaies want a return for there racing sponsorship. Rallying for subaru was very shrewd gave them world wide coverage for relatively low cost and turned a farmers car into a desirable item.

Good to see Phil on the telly.

Last time i had a chat with him he was lumping tyres around the Oulton Park padock at our track day.

I think he did a great job first time out in the BTCC.

I'll second that John.

Once he got in the groove 2nd race he wasn't taking any prisoners. Well done Phil, look forward to watching your season develop.

Ahhh, that Phil Bennett. It all becomes clear

Yes, good drive by him in the feature and I thought he did well in the sprint race too, even when being smacked up by Matt "I bend cars" N.

Good luck in the season Phil. Got Konis on that Astra ? Was it just me, or were those Astras actually good looking ?

Good to see Alfa 147 out even though they only built it in about 5 hours (or something). Pity it didn't last.

Touring will be better once they get more cars onto the grid. I liked the fact that tourers had to pit whereas production lot could stay out. Apart from driver changes, makes it a bit more like GT and GTO racing, i.e. more interesting.

Circuit race season to watch ? I think so.

Cheers

Ian

Yes, it's the same Phil Bennett who used to be a regular and outspoken contributor on this board. He's also helped out on some Subaru track days. I bought some part-worn slicks off him last year and found him a thoroughly nice guy who spent nearly an hour hour on the phone with me, talking the best lines around Donington. I wish I could remember everythig he told me!

It's great to see someone you can relate to doing well. And from the Grandstand coverage, he's not one to take many prisoners. A podium on his first outing!

Great stuff, and good luck, Phil.

Richard.

PS I've even got an Egg credit card!

The main reason that Scoobs and Evo's do not compete in the BTC is that the regulations forbid four wheel drive and turbos. Kinda leaves us out in the cold then...

Not wishing to slate Phil Bennett (he is a mate after all...), but if you look at his lap times from Brands and also from the recent Thruxton test, he is over 0.5 secs. off of the pace of the three other Vauxhalls that are only a couple of hundreths apart...

That, and the fact that the Peugeots are WAY off the pace at the moment mean that the boy has some work to do yet. But it is the best race car he has driven, so by mid season watch him go! Likes to mix it up and race a bit though. Nice coupla 'lunges' Phil!!
