Rob, Could have a look at Laterals cams for your build, good results with them, 280/280's would be to much for a road focussed car, are you staying with quad avc's ?

 

What would you recommend? Are the STI hatches brakes a better option if so where's the best place to source them???

 

Yes fit the Brembo's from the Hatch STI, front & rear, don't just fit the fronts with your original rears, there not a good combo, stud pcd is different on the disc's, fronts will require redrilling if your using OE disc's direct from an STI, the rears are dual drilled so no problems, you will require the backplates on the rear from the STI, or cut down your current ones, you will require all the caliper mounting bolts for the Brembo's, as the originals won't fit.
Try Litchfield Imports, as they do a lot of Alcon upgrades on STI's & may keep & sell the originals, thats where mine came from, off a brand new car.

Cheers for the info, what's the going rate for hatch brembos? Was just checking out some yank sites regarding this matter and they seem to be fitting 4 pots and 2 pots from the hawk WRX on theirs! How do you rate these? Are they worth the hassle?

 

Not worth the effort, most chuck those for Brembo's anyway, plus they won't fit the rears on a Hatch without a lot of work.
Going rate about £350.00 front, rears quite cheap as they only fit the Hatch, about £150.00.

 

That's not to bad I thought they would be a lot more than that, I will contact litchfield and ask them to keep me in mind if any hatch calumets come in

Never thought of lateral cams to be honest. The two me & Andy talked about were kelford & cosworth. He was under the same views as yourself 280/280 too much for a road car. Yeah I'm planning on staying with the quad avcs as I have two heads minus cams sat boxed for the build.

Just sold mine, great car, bought a Insignis VXR its a fair bit quicker than my 10 plate WRX even after the remap much more gadgets to go wrong too
went out to a 10 plate STI but got side tracked by the VXR so thought why not its an 11 plate with 700 miles on it in white, looks a beast,

will proberbly go back to an STI in a month lol

 

Hi all, well the Sti Hatch has now gone :-( feels like I've had my ball cut off at the moment lol. Anyway I have a Forge blow off valve for sale if anyone wants it. Looking for £60 posted let me know chaps...cheers Ian

 

I hope your Vxr isn't one of these that's effected with the ringland problem or turbo or gearbox lol & I thought the STi was bad lol.

 

Safe jacking point for a trolley jack?

Tomorrow (Saturday) I am heading off to get my new winter tyres fitter, however on another car the guy at the tyre place managed to crack the under tray as it covered the chassis rails couldn't easily be seen.

Where on the hatch is safe to jack without breaking anything? On older cars it was easy to find a nice load bearing piece of chassis lift the car without damage, these days everything is covered.

 

Garage could use a 2 or 4 poster lift with jack?
Else probably have to use the jacking points on the sill... I find the front point lifts all that side so can do do 2 wheels at once!

 

Rear Diff and front subframe jacking plate....................

went for a test drive couple of months ago in a Insignia vxr. quite comfortable, nice interior, amazing sound from the remus exhaust, but i thought it was sooo slow and heavy feeling!!
bought an RS4 after a while. now looking to replace the mrs car with an STI hatch...

Rob, have you thought of just dropping the complete cosworth heads and cams on, this is the route I am going with, on my build as its working out about the same price, when you buy all the parts and get the head work done.

I assume you are going closed deck and 14mm head studs on the bottom end.

My goal is 600hp with the new saloon as the hawkeye just didnt make it with 583hp & 545 ft/lbs.

Good luck with the build as its not as easy as people think and still keeping a good driveable car with a descent pwoerband. Iddy

 

Not going down the route of cosworth heads, more self satisfaction building something to my own spec to be honest. After mr finch's advice she'll be fine with what I have planned. The valves etc wont be coming from this country which saves me a chunk.

Yeah it's not that simple as there's quite abit more than just the engine to look at lol
Just building it over winter & some of next year to spread the costs out as you know it's not too cheap haha.

only issue I have is a three stone chip due to stupid gritter lorry on the motorway last weekend.. sitting in the middle lane chucking grit all over the place.. including the front of my car.
