I had to threaten IM with legal action over my ringland failure as they said the car had been driven to distruction (idiots).when it was rebuild it had one new piston,new big ends lasted 330 miles (one week) before the big ends went ,and it had not even got to its first service 9k on the clock.Will never,never,never,never buy another subaru.

That seems to be an underlying sentiment now sadly. I'm on my last subaru too, I'm going german after this one.

 

Have been looking at MY11's recently, they seem to be holding up fine and as far as I am aware no failures so far, really want an E92 M3 but the scoob is just so much better value so may well get myself a new (2nd hand) saloon next year.

Yes they do have a a different map.

There were 2 standard maps on the 08's IIRC, the second to try and fix the original issue, and I'm sure I was told the PPP map did not need updating, but with the amount of PPP cars going bang I think that was little hopefull by IM.

I know nothing about mapping myself apart from watching Andy F remap a previous 05 STI

Now, what it appeared like to me was that he dumped a 'close' base map on the car before he started work.
Then tweaked this base map, therefore whatever map was there before was overwritten - regardless of whether it was factory based on not

Andy would create a base map for said vehicle based on injector size exhaust mods/Turbo and intake system and download into the vehicle to start from Hence the term base map.

Then its a case of adjusting the fueling/boost and ignition table to make the most of what's been done to the engine to a point which is safe and det free with a degree of safety margin built in for crap fuel. this is custom to your vehicle and no one elses.

 

i'm going to get a website setup where it has a brief questionnaire for hatch owners to fill in regarding details and outcome of their engine failure/s or if they were so scared of it happening to them (like ABX) and fuked the warranty and went for 3rd party map.

building this information will be invaluable.

any IT experts who want to help me with this please contact me as I have no idea how to set up the coding for this.

If I can print off each case and build up a folder full of them then at least its some ammunition

not sure if this is connected with all the other problems with the Hatches, but x-mas this year my 330s ran low on oil (despite occasional checks and no sign of where oil went to) and buggered the VVT units and valves above (just quoting what I was told). The guys where I took it were brilliant and fixed it but still came to £2800. The car has 35K on it and I am getting especially worried reading all these failures. I have just got it back again after the engine management light come on for a camshaft position sensor L/H/S? I must admit I wont even consider buying a Subaru again until all these problems are sorted.

They did not no what happened,just that the big ends went and damaged more of the engine.When they put the new short motor in they used some of the old parts from the old engine like cams,valves as the heads were damaged,car was never right after and p/x the piece of rubbish in a few months later.

 

Suspect if the bigends had gone initially then there would have been evident damage to the crank which a new set of bearings would not be too happy to run on before ripping them appart.

Hedge bets the crank wasn't measured and std size shells fitted to a worn crank. Ticking time bomb

 

There's a few different models on eBay, all about £350 ish including a rear camera and digital tv tuner. I'm very tempted. I do like the oem look, however the menu looks a bit on the cheap side. Do you know if the icons etc can be changed? What's the sound quality like? I'm guessing your steering controls work too?

CE - Windows CE, it will either be version 5 or 6. Was just trying to figure out what the difference was.

My 2008 STi seems to be running perfectly, it's done 22k, it doesn't use any oil from what I can see. Its had the "corrective" remap from Subaru but I was wondering what I can do to prevent the failures others have experienced. Are there are any components that I can get changed or upgraded to ensure I won't have the failure further down the line?

Also, another quickie, what brake pads do you guys recommend? I'm on OE discs.

 

Keep an eye on oil & coolant levels, Keep the rpm 500 rpm from the rev limiter. Use decent fuel.

my 08 sti was runing fine before ringlet failure had 44k on clock never missed a beat or used any oil etc & had map patch done

dont think there is any thing u can do to stop it happening other than fitting forged pistons etc

but others may have other ideas

 

Get a non Subaru map, either Ecutek or someone like Dynamix will sort you out with a map that gives you more confidence and more power to add. I was not even convinced the map update by Subaru was safe so went aftermarket from very early on!

Yes the menus are not the most advanced, mine are only 2 tone but I think the newer models are colour.
Icons cannot be changed on mine but again maybe on newer models.
Sound quality very good.
Steering controls work from the get go with no additional modules.
Not sure on which Windoes version.

I was originally looking at Kenwoods but at the time they were about 1k with nav, this was about £300 with the nav software, that and the fact it has DVD and sd I could not refuse.

I very rarely get close to the red line, will keep an eye on fluids etc. if it gives me another 12 months hassle free then it wouldn't bother me too much if it all went bang! Would be a good excuse for some performance mods!

Re the pads, Brembo ones come in at £100 (front and rear), while the pagids from Eurocarparts come in at £48 after a 30% discount code (which expires tomorrow apparently).

So will I notice the difference between these two pads? Ultimately I don't want any less braking power
