Glad to see our Hatches were 1.1 seconds quicker than the Focus RS around the TG track last night, now I'm convined I made the right choice.

And what was all that Torque steer about, thought they'd fixed that!

That makes the Audi S3 also quicker than the Focus RS then?

Question "this" got lost / unanswered in general tech.... as I thought it would

Hi folks....

Gotta lotta questions regarding the new 2.5 Sti lump...

1. Why does it produce more power than the last shape 2.5 - is it all done to the valves / heads or what ?

2. What is the standard boost - 1.0 bar ?

3. It seems that with only a remap 330-340bhp is easily achieved @ 1.4 bar and with an induction kit even more is available. Then full exhaust and you're talking about 380bhp and similar torque. 'Mog' remapped his ppp car, added an induction kit and blasted his way into the 380's, so did Rob84 (non ppp) but he also used a full H&S exhaust to get there. 'Some experts' have said that at 380bhp the engine is unstable and the bit between the cylinder bores gets a bit liable to break. 'Other experts' say 380 - 400bhp is safe and do-able @ 1.5 bar. My question is what is it that makes the engine "supposedly wobbly" at 380 - the fact that the boost is too high at 1.5 and the pistons dont like that - or is it just that the power is too much ?

One of Harveys mates (tuning garage owner) got high 380's and over 400lbs torque with magnex exhaust, induction kit, and remap only.

Or howabout exhaust, induction, harvey ported headers and flow matched up-pipe and remap at 1.35 - 1.4 bar to get to 380 - would that be safe or is 380+ the bogeyland?

I also understand that the jdm based T20 have basically 'the same pistons' as the european and USA versions (not forged), so why is it ok for the jap car to get to 395 bhp and not ours ?

Just seems that 395bhp is certainly nigh on obtainable with standard turbo, full exhaust, induction kit, ported headers and up-pipe, and custom ecutek remap @ 1.5 bar.

THANKS in advance for your imput and answers

All the above with consideration that 3 years ago the mighty T25 was the ultimate at 350bhp - it seems the game has been moved on considerably with the hatch .... good choice everyone

standard boost is around 1bar i think

variable valve timing on the exhaust side from what i know is the big difference.

mines ran 380 bhp for the last 10k and still goes like a train, regular oil changes at 3000 miles cant go wrong.

I could not agree more; and it's slow, terrible to use everyday, makes no power even after minor mods and a re-map, handles badly, that annoying Ken Block bloke uses one and it smells like old sushi, I must have been mad to have bought one

Engine standard so far.....
1. A combination of different variable valve timing on both the inlet and exhaust side, turbo & other bits that are too technical for me to understand - in short Subaru just further developed/improved the 2.5 engine (well apart from that dodgy factory map).

2. I understand it's about 1.0 bar as standard, I'm running around 1.2 to 1.3 bar on the standard turbo as it had problems holding onto anything above this consistently when on boost. I don't think you would get the standard turbo to hold on to 1.5bar - that's why I am saving up for a engine re-build and a MD321 series turbo (or a hybrid twin-scroll set-up).

3. I have the Milltek full turbo back 3" system, the Lichfield Cold Air Intake and a re-map and 380/400 is possible (I held back at 350/380 for reliability as it is a daily driver, I drive it hard and I have had one replacement engine under warranty already).

There are various thoughts on what is within safe tolerances, with some people saying up to 400bhp on the std internals is fine and other saying the cylinders can start to move around within the block and/or balloon and fail above 355bhp. I've been told by reputable tuners that a number of other factors including the poor fueling/overheating of cylinder number 3 can also be an issue when running big numbers (a good mapper should sort this though) and drivetrain, gearbox and clutch issues can raise there ugly heads when you start going above 400ft lb torque.

I understand the JDM 2.0 pistons are made from the same hueristic cast material as the UK and Euro 2.5 pistons, but the pistons and cylinder bores are smaller and therefore cylinder movement/ballooning and piston ring land failures are less of an issue when tuning. But remember the 2.5 is in someways a nicer engine to live with on a day to day basis due to it's extra low down grunt.

So it's up to you mate...trust me it is a better car once you change the exhaust and air filter get it mapped anyway, you just need to decide if you want to be on the safe side at around 350bhp or go for 380bhp, or maybe in-between the two

Some nice person has very kindly reversed into the front of my car but after a week of cussing I've decided not to get the chip / dent repaired in the front bumper as the car is brand new and I might as well get a few stone chips over the next year before getting it resprayed.

Anyway, I thought I might cheer myself up and spend the money on some new alloys. Currently have the standard 330s five spoke silver ones but fancy black / graphite ones as the car is Metalic Dark Grey. The ones I find are most commonly 18x9 which I'm told will be flush with the arches externally. Will they causing chipping to the arches from flying debris as the inner 1cm is the bodywork return? Anyone suggest some suitable alloys that will fit comfortably on the car and in my pocket around £1000? I pretty sure the standard ones are 18x8.5 which seem to sit ok

Sorry to hear that mate, somebody did the same to my rear bumper when we had all that snow and I have not claimed for it yet either.

Have you thought about having the ones you have re-sprayed, have a look at these on mine:

What was the approx. cost and what did you do while they were being done i.e. how long was your car out of action?

rb5 what size are they and how much are you asking?

Yes andy f mapped mine, at 1.5 bar and it does hold no problem. but if i say drive in i mode i do get boost creep at 5k is it just keeps boosting up but the mapping was adjusted for this so doesnt really bother me tbh

Default Oh the joys of IM Customer Services

Anyone had an update as to when SMS control will be returned for the tracker? I keep trying to get an answer and am being told that it is a world wide thing and that it's all OK as the central command centre can still remote into the kit.

Thing is, we are supposed to pay 100 euro a year for communication credits to keep the system live, but if you can't actually use the credits, are they going to issue a refund or allow us to roll the credits over to the following year?

Plus the fact, thew geek in me liked the fact that I could get updates direct to my iphone whenever I wanted!

If we all ask the same question we might just get an answer. If you've not tested your SMS commands, please give it a go (as it might just be me (is it cos I is stoopid?).

Cheers
