Right quite a bit done today, although only one thing crossed off my list (and as per usual more things added) - also updated a few things... blue text means non important/essential tasks

- Fit ally door cards
- Fit dry cell battery in cabin, remove old battery and re-wire - Done 18/4/10
- Fit Jamz plate
- New gearbox oil
- Fix drivers side rocker cover (stop oil leak)

[Update 18/4/10]
- Put washer bottle in boot, run new wires from plug in bonnet and new water pipe
- Fit rear camber bolts
- Get height of coilovers same all round
- Fit new bucket seats
Right first a bit of a disaster today... took the old top mounts off the front suspension to fit the new Cusco pillow ball top mounts to only find out that the thread on the pillow ball is the wrong size, so the Eibach damper thread is smaller then it needs to be and just went straight through the hole - So i don't know what to do here, i think its too small to have threaded sleeve put in and tap the sleeve - Gutted

On the up though, dry cell battery has now been placed in the boot, and power wire ran from the bonnet (to a distribution block) to the battery, and earthed to the shell of the car.

Started the car straight up and everything worked fine quite a bit of smoke from the bonnet due to the heat wrap bedding in (had to open all the doors in the garage to clear the smoke) - Waited till everything warmed up until turning the car off, Oil Pressure works spot on, Oil temp works, seems to idle a bit strange though, going up to 2k revs and once revved goes down to 1k - But i think that may be down to it not being started for a few months

*Rant - why do they make the oil dip stick so hard to read... its as if the dip stick tube is coated in oil and you cannot read it right) *Rant over* - So i think I may have a little bit too much oil in the car, but cannot tell as i cannot see a line

I gave the front mount intercooler a bit of spray with some satin black (no pictures of it though - as I was rushed out the house cos dinner was ready)

I finished removing the sound deadening from the rear seats, and painted it

I started removing the rest of the sound deadening from the boot, finished where the spare wheel would be, and painted.

I started to try and remove the standard bolts from the rear suspension to fit the camber bolts, but they are stiff as hell... I forgot my breaker bar so only had a normal spanner, and couldn't get it to budge with a impact driver + heat

Tidied the front of the car up a bit, removed some crap i had laying around in the front

Well i just got back from doing a little bit of work on the car tonight...

One question, how the hell do you get standard camber bolts into the rear... they go in the top right? i took the top bolt out, but could i hell get the camber bolt in... i think there was just enough room to get camber bolt into the eibach coilover bit, but not into the hub :s

Also on another note, i dont know if i like the digital camo, did a bit more tonight and cant make up my mind if it looks good or not... my lasses brother thinks it looks ****, so unless someone can convince me, it will be all coming off

Right, started the car up tonight just to double check everything has been working... this time i didnt disconnect the crank sensor (as i usually do, to get oil round the system first, especially around the oil cooler)

Anyway, i noticed when i turned it over, the oil light came on for a second then went off when the engine got through it cycle (obviously no oil in the system)

Anyway, it always seems to run a little lumpy to start off with, and nears a stall on idle some times, but when it did it tonight, i head a slight knock

But when i revved the engine up to 1500rmp+ the noise went away... my heart sank when i heard a couple of knocks, although it could only be heard on the front drivers side of the engine, and nothing on the back... but when revved it went away.

Is this the sound of doom? I only have 3 weeks left till my first track day and I cant afford/get an engine rebuild in before then

Please please please dont be the sound of death

Doesn't sound good mate

How loud is the "knock"? Have heard a couple gone now and it is a pretty noticeable knock!

always a slight chance it could be piston slap? Other than that I wouldn't be confident in taking a poorly car to a trackday.....best stop and strip now before you do any serious damage to the block etc....

TBF after watching video's on youtube its nothing like as loud as they are... you probably wouldnt even hear it on a video it i recorded it...

Like i said, it was only happening on the brink of stalling and wasnt very loud at all... could only just hear it with your ear near the front of the block...

Well finally got the trailer sorted today... all been painted up and looks good as new, brakes sorted and full rewired

Just thinking about getting some anti slip mat stuff to put on the bed of the trailer (you see it on the new brian james trailers - kinda like sand paper)

Disaster today... one of the things i needed to do was tighten up the oil cooler pipe at the bottom as I saw it was leaking ever so slightly, but I went too far and ended up tightening it up that much it took the threads off

So new oil cooler on order now, which meant I couldn't do some of the other things i needed to do IE brakes on the passenger side.

I tried getting the tubing (for the window washers) through the bulk head (same location as i took the power lead, but failed, so have to drill a new hole somewhere (just a pain trying to get the drill in anywhere under the bonnet, as its double skinned at the top.

As I couldn't get on with much else, i got my show plate fitted (should go nice with my slick alloys )

Hopefully the camber bolts I purchased from America will be here this week so I can get the car booked in to get its 4 wheel geo setup (going to try and get it booked in for the day we go down to Japfest)

Also attempted to remove the back box, to try and get a bung/mute made up for track use, but could I hell get it off (would have used my hammer drill but I've smashed the bit i used, so will have to get a new one of them too)

God its 2 steps forward, 3 steps back at the moment

On another note, when i was painting the boot today, i noticed a metal bit which i removed to reveal this bottle... now what the hell is this for? Its connected with three pipes but i cannot see where they go to... there is no way to fill this thing up with anything and is completely empty ?

Where abouts was that bottle James?

Also, make sure you stick a non-return valve, maybe 2, in the washer pipe. Otherwise, it'll probably take a short while to actually clean your windscreen.

That bottle was in the boot, drivers side, just by where the boot hinge is on the wheel arch.

As for the washer bottle, aye ive got two none return valves (also got some tubing from halfords but its not long enough lol so there may be 3 none return valves going in as there is only t-peice adapters)

Nope that was by the rear light... not near the wheel arch... re knocking, it was just doing it when cold, been told its quite normal.

You can use vac pipe for the washer fluid, if you get stuck.

I forget what year your car is? Also is it a UK car?

Ignore the above, found the info on page 1.

Nothing like that bottle in my car, similar vintage.

Got some more done today, as my new gearbox oil arrived from OpieOils (cheers oilman) - I went for Castrol Syntrax Universal 75w-90, which will hopefully sort out the problems i found at the last track day.

- My new oil cooler arrived today too, so I went down to work on the car after i finished work. First i fit the oil cooler, put a load of pfte tape around the threads so hopefully no oil will leak out put the front mount back on and started her up (also double checked for knocking noises, but cranked the car over a couple of times before i actually started her just to get oil through the cooler) - thinking about wiring in a switch to control the crank posision sensor, so I dont have to disconnect the lead all the time i want to prime the oil cooler.

So once that was all fitted, i put the front end back together, bumper is back on, lights/sidelights and grill
Name: a0f16ab8.jpg
Views: 0
Size: 235.7 KB

Next i started to feed the water pipe for the washer jets into the cabin, along with a new wiring loom to control the pump from the stalk... The pipe and wires are all connected up under the bonnet, and are fed into the passenger footwell, just need to put them to the back.

I also had a look at the drivers side rocker cover, was it was leaking oil a little bit once the car was turned off after being warm (seems as if the cover expands when warm and allows the oil to drip out a little) - The bolts were a little loose, so tightened them up a bit so hopefully that will stop it... i did however notice that there was some sealant around the block (looked like silicone sealant, not proper gasket sealant) that i just managed to pull off, so looks like its been leaking for a little while... may take it off and put some proper gasket sealant around it, that should hopefully fix that.

Then finally, removed the old gearbox oil (managed to drop the drain plug in the bucket i was draining into, so had to go fishing god that stuff stinks!!!! was pleased to only find a couple of little flakes of metal on the magnetic drain plug, so nothing too serious with the gearbox... Put 3 and 1/2 Litre in for now, and going to let that settle and see if it needs any more? (i got 5L all together, so i can do the rear diff too - not sure how im going to re-fill it though... hose pipe and funnel maybe?)

I take the gearbox takes 4L and diff 1L?

So a fair bit done today:

If you want it pre lubed, and running slicks, you need an Accusump or similar, and now is the time to get one if you are plumbing the oil cooler.

So many ppl have different options on slicks and dry sumps... one of the lads i know who races his impreza pretty much every other weekend has the same setup as me now nearly and no dry sump and has had no bother with oil surge... But I wont be running slicks for this upcoming track day (rules are only for road going tyres this time) so I wont need a dry sump for this one, but will maybe look into it for future.

Was actually reading about the accusump the other day in the latest Fast Ford mag, was gonna put a post up seeing if anyone had fit this into an impreza yet.

Right, got a little bit done last night and tonight on the car... Last night i managed to get one of my new bucket seats in the car Also had two little helpers taking the camo off the car (didn't like it and have someone who wants to advertise on the car now, so his stuff will be going on there)

Also got the camber settings I'm going to give a try thanks to Dunx:
https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...ml#post9375420

Tonight I removed the passenger seat ready for the new bucket seat to go in, only to find the brackets I got for this side doesnt fit properly, so some fine adjustment needed tomorrow.

Drivers side is all done pretty much, just need to tidy a couple of wires up... Passenger side wires are all nice and tidy now, as I spend a while hitting my head off the roll bar tidying them up tonight, so they look spot on. Washer bottle is now all wired up and piped in and works perfect

Had the car started today, and moved it over in the garage a bit, so I can see if the rocker cover is still leaking (I dont think it is anymore - but i might just get some gasket sealant anyway and put it around the gasket to make sure it doesnt leak)

Wow what a day... 9am start on the car, and got everything pretty much finished now (well mechanically, and a litte cosmetic)

Started off getting the bucket seats mounted in the cars, the cobra went in without a problem, but the sparco bucket seat was slightly different and require a little modification, so that is now mounted in the car and works spot on

Next i tidied up the wires under the bonnet, put plastic protectors over the power wire and the new washer bottle wires/pipes.

Then the car got a clean,

My lass wanted to practise with the machine polsiher and some new products she got (she's into car cleaning) and the car came up a treat, she got all the scratches and swirl marks out the car and looks as good as it did when it came out the garage.

I then went and did the camber bolts on the passenger side of the car (couldnt do them last time as i had the car too close to the wall) - Just need to book the car in to get a 4 wheel alignment done.

I then tidied out the inside of the car, took all my tools and extras out the car, hoovered up all the dust and cleaned the glass.
