snapping one if fairly impressive ned of...Sy is just special

Assume these breakages were all at launch and normal spirited driving won't, sorry shouldn't result in breaking one?

I broke a front shaft on sunday in the Pro street drag series.Cars got around 540bhp ,thats on road tyres T1R's.
First go of the day and BANG grease all over the place ,smoke coming from the bonnet, sort of relieved it was just a shaft
Did not have a spare but RCM come to my rescue and borrowed 2 gobstopper front shafts ,it was really busy only managed 1 run when the car was fixed 11.5 ,124mph ,think i could have got a low 11 as that run was a crap start and slow gear changes

I wish all i broke was driveshafts, it would have been a damn sight cheaper than the numerous gearboxes i have been through!

Steven

ps NEVER broken a driveshaft!

the worst thing for shafts are big changes in grip, the pod is especially bad as the there is a bit on the track about 20-30ft out where the glued section of track will be in better condition and less messed about with. If you hit this section with some spin on the wheels it can often get grip, bog and snap a shaft!

That makes a lot of sense Paul. Sy;s shaft did break changing into 2nd gear at about 20 - 30 foot from the start line.

I find it very strange that with today's technologies that an item as simple as a drive shaft is so prone to breakage?

Surely there must be a system that can somehow cushion or assist the energy absorbed through a d/shaft ?

If you're 'between a rock and a hard place' and the wheel/s cannot slip, then what would you rather have break: expensive, pain in the butt gearbox/clutch... or a relatively inexpensive/simple to fix driveshaft?! They're probably deliberately designed to let go first ...

Yep, you have a good point Joz. It would prove handy (and financially rewarding) for someone somewhere to develop an electronic sensor that can determine stress levels and then interact with the ECU to somehow reduce power for the fractions of seconds that matter.

When you think of some of the mind blowing items that the best ECU's are capable of, there must be something they could work out?.

Indeed - it wouldn't take much, I wouldn't have thought. Some kind of torque/load sensors on the wheels, that the ECU can read and cut the revs or something?

surely that would put an end to the really good launches as sensor would forever interfer with traction or lack off

Could fit switches into the wires for the traction sensors that go to the ECU - the switches could be between extended wiring out of the footwell and to hand, mounted on the dash/fascia, obviously.

Seriously, you've hit upon the reson why the manufacturers don't regard it as a necessary feature... The car as it left the factory isn't torquey enough and they wouldn't condone full-bore standing starts at drag strip events, anyhow lol.

Na, not really matey, as Paul said it's hard changes with maximum grip that cause more damage than launches, and what did you & I witness last Saturday. exactly that.

I understand what you are saying but I dont think it would work as hard as say TC because it would not need to, only when it senses a failure, so if they design it correctly it should only interfere with launches at the same % as the breakage %.

You have hit the nail on the head in reality Joz.

It's us that is the problem.
Silly power is now possible so we have it
