Sorry for the hijack but..... A question for the rottie owners! I have a 2.5ish year old rescue lab.Now i've been in love with rotties since i was a kid.we had one and so did my grandad.i'm really starting to think about getting one as a play mate for my lab.Basicly what are peoples genaral reactions to your dog?It's because i walk my dog round the local park-woods-castle off the lead every day and would want to do the same with the rottie.Obviously i would make sure he/she was properly trained and socalised befor i did this.I just realy don't want to have to put the rottie on the lead everytime we come across a dim sod who thinks they're gonna get bitten.
Any advice would be Fab

In all fairness for the idiots, there are the 1 in 100 owners who dont control the dog. I walk my dads cross mutt thing and it couldnt kill a moth.. but I still say to people when they come near that she is harmless but a bit grumpy. They then choose if they approach and if she growls they know.

A rotty is different due to the size of the thing and some little girl that has no control verbally and would have no chance physically makes me nervous

do you let your dog off the lead round the park mate? Do you get alot of idiots giving you greef if he goes over to them/there dog for a sniff and a play. i get it a fair bit with my dog because he's just young and loves everyone lol not a mean bone in his body just wants fuss hehe

I let her off but I dont let her near other dogs until I get the nod. I dont want her getting used to running over straight away as when shes bigger shes cause a few scares!

Not had one person complain about her yet... but she is only 4 months.. well just under.

to be fair im very lucky in the fact that theres lots of open fields near us, so in fact when i take him we often dont bump into anyone, but the way it is now I usually just shout him and put him on the lead when other people are around, saves hassle.

Our Cocker Spaniel has damaged more people than most Rotties, being blind and deaf she just trips people up, if that doesnt get you the smell does.

I think thats the main thing i'm worried about mate.All the places that are close to me where i walk my dog are very popular with other dog walkers and i would not want to have to keep calling the rottie back to put it on a lead or do the hole walk with him/her on a lead while my other dog was having fun off the lead. would all be a bit unfair.

its worth it imho though.

wouldnt be without him. my 2 year old daughter loves him and he dotes on her.

i can't really remember any bad reactions to our old rottie or my grandads but saying that i was only 8/9 when they both died. always remember playing cowboys in the back garden with roco as me horse lol lol loved that dog to bits.

It might be just that dog, but its eyes were cold, I couldnt see any affection from it.... it didnt seem to react to me apart from growling and sort rubbing its open mouth against me... I not a shamed to admitt... it did worry me !!

Rotti are lovely dogs, have had 2 and currently got one but you do have to show them who's boss as the can try and be the dominant one, our one growls if you tunr your back to him, but still wouldnt heart a fly, well unless he has too.

jonathan, ours goes off a lead but he comes back when called, but i find you have to re-ensure other people that the dog is ok when approached by the rotti, but that should be the case of all dogs, its just that the rotti has a lot of strength and size and the bad rep people have given then over the years.

Worng!! neither dog was brought up to fight!!! The rottie was a cattle herding dog and the GSD says it all in the name! They started to use them as guard dogs etc etc because they have a very natural guarding instinct and it's very easy to bring out.Hence why you read all the stories in the papper because some chav has got one to try and look hard and has no idea how to raise the bread properly.

Basically what I'm wondering is would my dog stand a chance against a Rotty if it got attacked by one? GSD are "tuff" but the rotty looks to be muscle!

I supose if i look at it that way it's kind of like my dog. Tends to go springing over to other dogs for a play and to people for fuss.But genraly people see labs as a kind breed so nerver seem bothered but i always reasure them he would only lick them to death.

The big prop i'm having with mine at the moment (happed this morning on his walk) he sees a dog maybe 2 feilds away and he's off. This morning went under a barbwire fence through a stream unber another barbwire fence then acrooss the feild to see these 2 dogs he spotted. He's normaly very good with recall. blow the dog wistle and call him and he comes first time 95% of the time but over the last week as in the situation above he just goes def and he's on a misstion and will not come back till he's ready. which can be a bit unnerving as i have no way to get to him and i'm prob a good 500m away.
I'm gonna have to talk to the gun dog trainer we go to and nip it in the bud prontow.

i'm going for a close run thing wth the gsd just edging it on the straights with the rottie the better in the twisties
in a straight fight if both are trained to fight then the rottie will batter the gsd in a big way-adult rotties can run 12 stoneish and just dont feel pain(in comparison to most breeds) my dog is 8 months old and 7 stone although he is unusually big for his age.
if both are well brought up pets with an attack of sudden bravado then best guess would be about 20 stitches each-one serious bite each'd be enough i think judging by my rots (and previous experience of gsds) then hide behind owner

You will always meet with prejudice with a Rottie, its just one of the things you have to put up with.

But its well worth it, in my opinion

Our bitch is fantastic with dogs, tends to give people a wide berth until she knows them. Our boy loves the girls, not mad about the boys but loves people, and does the whole sit on them/growly thing - although we don't let him until we know they understand what they are getting into by claping him

He's often on a lead (albeit a 30 foot extending one) because he can't be trusted if we meet entire male dogs - although he's fine once he gets to know them at which point he's free to play and socialise
