Unhappy

Hope you do Rannoch, as the car died last night.

Rob, approx £2000

T-uk, yes it was that cylinder.

Driving home gently last night and just as i got to my village and lifted off to slow down from 70 to 40, there was a big loss of power and a rough feel to the car, black smoke coming out the back, and the nock count on the link counted 6

As i pulled into the drive, it stalled. Fired it back up and rested it at the bottom of the garden.

Had tea and did the checks again, all plugs were fine, compression results were:-
25/9/03 then (24/9/03)

1 100~110psi (120~130psi)
2 120~130psi (120~130psi)
3 100~110psi (120~130psi)
4 100psi (110~120psi)

Oil level on the 24/9/03 was between the 2 marks, so fine. Oil yesterday 25/9/03 was bewlow the lower line

Have not got a bloody clue as to what it is now

The smoke coming out the back is horrible, even on rough idle.

Needless to say, i have gone from happy to sad in less than a day.

No scoobyshootout for me

Steven

edited to number cylinders correctly

Hmmm..maybe not so serious Stephen.

Have a check of any pipework in the area of the boost solenoid and emissions area. Specifically the MAP sensor (the 4mm type rubber hoses)
Sounds like one of them has come off and is causing the car to go very rich and run rough at idle especially with the compressions being not bad.

You have heavy *black* smoke out the back?

Damn shame, I love seeing this wagon run.

If theres anything a novice can do to help (probly not) even picking up parts, give me a shout

Alan, are you sure it could be that simple?

It is definately BLACK smoke, i held a kitchen towel over the exhaust for approx 2 seconds, and it was solid black

Hopefully David will come over tomorrow and we can have a look at it, i will try those things tonight, ran out of time and light last night.

Why would it stall though, and why no oil?

Emma must have loved that!

Hope it is something simple, but ultimately you've got a new engine. It's wierd that compression is still so good though?

I'd offer to help, but I think I have my family back home today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! etc.

Steven, I blew the blow off valve off the pipework on mine & the reaction I got was I thought I had blown the engine

basically the car wouldnt run, accelerate the black smoke it made scared the **** outta me etc.....

I think it could be a hose so its loosing all air into the engine & thus running horrendously rich as others have said...

Me looking at the bad side of everything as well, i'm sure this is what started my engine on its slow & painfull route to death, as since that day its got progressivly worse & worse

Hope you manage to sort it

Cool

Rob,

you want a Group Buy - what would you be prepared to pay - being realistic about duty, VAT and shipping?

These short engines look cheap in NA, but once they are brought over they are a little more expensive than they look!!

Stevie (star of TOTB II on Sky) is right - it would be great if these things could be avoided - but on a bulk purchase it would be much more difficult...

...so hands up who wants one

Steven,

will see you later on.

I think it is that simple. What you've said on this thread about the problem reminds me of a similar situation i had a long time ago. Same symptoms

{get out clause}
Though obviously i haven't seen the car to be sure...

Let us know what you find.

Hi Steven,

Sorry to hear of your ongoing saga . I hope you get it sorted for Sunday as it won't be the same without your wagon running

Can't offer any technical advice as I'm an engine-numpty but if there's anything else I can do (even if it's just picking you up and driving you to Elvington on Sunday) just let me know

Like I said on the email Steven, I am really sorry it is being a b1tch..

After seeing it on TOTB2 last night I was looking forward to seeing you run.

Really hoping it is something simple.

You will see it run

After getting up early, ready for an all dayer, i did as Alan suggested, and replaced all the hoses to the MAP sensor and boost solenoid, one by one.

The last one was the bottom of the map sensor, and **** me it works fine. Pressure tested the hose with the compressor and it has a fine split in it, which under pressure just opened up.

Thanks for all your help guys, really feel stupid, but glad its something simple, cheers for the suggestion Alan.

Excellent, like I said on scoobyshoot out thread, don't move the car now..

I was thinking about the compression reading being lower slightkly the second time and it must be due to warm and cold engine etc??

See you tomorrow..

the best md304 set-up I have drove was at 1.5bar in the mid and 1.25ish at the very top. ask it to do more than 1.3 at the top and you swear it's faster until you ap22/road dyno it.

let us know how you get on.
