Has the time finally arrived??

Recently noticed the knock link getting a bit more active, which is strange, as it is normally very quiet, even at TOTB i only had 3 counts of knock on the link unit all day, which was amazing given the abuse and temperature!

Tonight driving home, 2nd gear, 3 counts of knock, normally nothing. Take it easy, then later, more in 3rd and 4th and 5th, each time i lift off and check on the link unit. Count recorded!

Got home early, as we were supposed to be going to look at a kitchen (again), and as i pulled up, i noticed the fuel pump was rather loud, a lot louder than normal, even emma asked, "whats that noise"!!

Left home, and drove to in laws, 1 mile, to say good night to our 2 kids. Left there and realised we had forgotten something, so went back to collect, only 400 yds in total. Fuel pump still loud!

Set off again, bear in mind the road we pull onto is a high speed road (60 limit but people do a lot more!!), so pull out gently in 1st and then boot it in 2nd as a car is coming rather quickly!!

Seemed alright to 5000, then it suddenly bouncd off the rev limiter (totally unaware, ie too quickly), puff of smoke, loss of power, so pulled into laybe instantly, no more than 200 yds from setting off, and pull up.

Car is idling as rough as a badgers ****, 3000rpm, 800rpm, 3000rpm, etc, etc and anywhere in between, close to stalling a couple of times whilst i was trying to see what the problem was!!

Thought it might have been the inlet manifold again, which lost a bolt and subsequently let air in, so idle was high. That i could tell by leaning on the inlet, as it then idled normally.

This time i have tried that, and nothing alters!! Car is smoking a bit, white in colour, but nothing major (ie massive plumes). Within the header tank there appears to be a couple of metal flecks but no cream, if you know what i mean!

****, ****, bastid, what is wrong! The car has been absolutely faultless, baring the gearbox, over the last 18 months!!

Is it time to change, or go silly!!

Dont have time to sort problem out, working tomorrow and going to Munich on Friday, come back Sunday, work the next week!!

Scooby shoot out is a week on Sunday, and i was so looking forward to it!

I was just thinking about upping the boost too

Only conselation is that i have avoided spending 5 or 6k on a kitchen!!, but sadly that wont last long

A rather gutted and peed off Steven

Sounds strange ?? Hunting from 800 - 3000 is not usually a blown engine thing, Map sensor hose blown off ? might explain the fuel cut or was it the rpm limiter ? Doesn't explain the smoke though.
Are you sure it's the fuel pump noisy ? and not a squeal from an air leak or something else ?

FFS... really sorry to read that mate..

Hoping it is something silly..... but it doesn't sound good.

Although might just be head gasket, although that fuel pump noise doesn't tie in..

Must be time to go mad!

Here's hoping..

Run the engine with the oil filler cap off, put your hand over it and rev up, you should feel a slight suction, any pressure felt suggests its terminal

Fuel pump is definately noisy.

It wasnt fuel cut, chattered on the limiter then there was a kind of bang like metal on metal, and then the sound of something hitting the underneath of the car. Emma said "what was that?"

It did feel as though it was going like a rocket though!

No hoses appeared to be off anywhere, will try and check tomorrow night, if i have time, going to work in Emmas jeep tomorrow

There does sound to be an air leak squeal, as well as the fuel pump, i know the pump is loud as it got louder nearer the rear drivers wheel.

The squeal i cant find, heard similar before, but leaning on the manifold stopped that, which was a lost bolt. Did not work this time.

So i am hoping that taking the inlet off and having a good look around will point me in the right direction.

Smoke is not present now, but then its cold, still idles badly though!

Do you monitor fuel pressure ?

Seemed alright to 5000, then it suddenly bouncd off the rev limiter (totally unaware, ie too quickly),
Don't understand this bit that would need to be clutch/diff/driveshaft failure ?

Yes, each time i open the bonnet, but beginning to think i should do so in cabin. I literally checked fuel pressure before it happened, as i thought there was something wrong with the pump, and its 3.2bar at idle at atmos.

Thats the bit that confused me andy!!, I can only describe it as a massive kick, ie big boost (but peak on defis says 1.3), and then bang, gearbox and drive feels fine

Question

Sorry to hear that Stephen White smoke? Maybe the head gasket? Take the radiator / expansion bottle cap off (when cold) and watch for chaffing of the water when you rev it up.
