Right, been away since Friday morning getting hammered at the Octoberfest in Muncih
. Still not checked car
, peed it down all day today, and due to the building work, could not get the car into a shed to look at it
Wednesday before i can now look at it.
The thinking is that the new 2.5 US STi short block goes in.

From: Leeds - It was 562.4bhp@28psi on Optimax, How much closer to 600 with race fuel and a bigger turbo?
Steven has sorted the car.. same engine..
Ill let him tell you what the problem was..
He needed no help from me.. so proves the point that he is capable of fixing his own car

Did a compression test and 3 of the cylinders were between 120 and 130psi, whilst the 4th was between 110 and 120, so not too serious a difference.
Then fired it up for the 1st time in daylight, and could now see where one of the problems were. Still idling badly though.
1st problem, the soft short rubber hose for the water way that goes underneath the fuel lines just behind where the air conditioning compressor would be, well when i did all the work before TOTB, i notice that the screw for the fuel line was pressing on this. I changed this so the screw wasnt touching, but left the rubber hose as it was.
Well it has obviously now split, and was p1ssing water out, spraying everywhere, including the exhaust etc, and once warm, it was creating the white smoke!!!
Could not find this when it was dark, so feel a little stupid.
Now second problem, on the passenger side of the inlet manifold, there was only 1 bolt holding this onto the head, but the car wasnt squeaking. Dont know where the bolst had gone, i did use thread lock, but the only bolt holding it on, was also loose.
Whilst looking around, i notice a pool of liquid on the block, opposite the injectors on the passenger side. So pressing the throttle, i could see fuel spurting out from between the inlet and the head

Dont know how that could happen, but it was happening, could have been very dangerous. Also probably explains while the fuel pump was screaming like a demented loonatic, trying to keep fuel pressure up.
So found some replacement bolts, slightly longer, and put a lot of thread lock on and tightened them up.
Fired it back up and seems ok, fuel pressure settled back down and fuel pump was quite. Had my tea and then took it out for a test.
Think whatever happened, has done something, as the car is now knocking a bit. I will observe how it goes going into work tomorrow, and if its still knocking, will adjust the map.
However, i have now pretty much decided that i am get very bored with this car/engine, and i am going to get the US 2.5 STi block to go with my heads and ancilaries.
This will be my Christmas project, and should offer quite a lot more torque lower down, which is where i like it. Not that there isnt anything there now, i am just too used to it

Glad all is back running again
and was relatively simple.
See you on Sunday
I am reduced to 0.75bar as she is knocking occasionally on 0.9bar..
doh.. and ran lean this morning and oil in places I'd rather it wasn't.
Will be plugging laptop in, think I must be getting near to max idc.

Good to hear it was nothing serious.
What about the queries with the US 2.5 engine. Didnt someone mention it may use cast pistons, or is everyone happy enough with that??
It does seem very good value. Even better if someone could be found to ship it as a gift, or warranty replacement...ie, no RIPP OFF VAT.

Wonder who would be up for a group buy
I'd be up for going over and sending back as gifts
Steven, what are your plans for the actual short engine itself?? will you try it 'as is' firstly or go forged straight away??

Try as is Rob. One of the reasons is cost. Dont want to go down the £#####'s route. So just thought buying the short block would give me a "different" car. Will probably then have to look at changing the turbo, or maybe not.
It is knocking like hell, so i fear that whatever happened, ahas caused a little damage somewhere.

How much advance are you running...
Save the map, and pull 5 degrees out or so all over..
you still running 34deg advance at top?
Edited to add, someone said that optimax goes off quick.. add some octane booster?

Cant remember TBH David, will look tonight on laptop, and save and restore with an older MAP. Optimax should be out by tomorrow morning so, will fill up again, but from a different garage this time.

Cool, glad it's semi sorted
****, fuel ****ing out of the engine could have been absolutely disasterous! Eek!
I can't understand what would cause an engine to knock when it wasn't knocking before, but that's my ignorance more than anything else
- but you didn't need me to tell u that

steven,
glad your running again and hope you sort the knock out before sunday.
out of interest, the cylinder that read lower on the compression test, was this the one that the inlet manifold was leaking at?
