No milky residue in oil, just blowing and loosing water out of overflow and this is what water/oil did to my cam housings on my heads, never took any pics of bearings as decided not to refresh and went fresh 2.1 block. But the bearings were in similar shape. Hence it's wise to check and not assume,
That's what happens when lack of lubrication, lucky not deep enough and fine polished out, but you get the jist
Would help if pics of the block too tho.
And this is a good example where i am saying a competant person would be needed.
heads are off so would be checked
score marks would be found and investigated further.
if you dont notice that then perhaps you should put he tools down.
if heads come off and are mint do we then crack blocks open and double the cost of this simple gasket replacement ?
Tidgy gets all his work done at ScoobyClinic, that's where all his "expertise" comes from regarding building engines. Cries like a bitch if you call him a fan boi mind.
He's right in a way though, if the block is split, it's a bit of a false economy to reuse the bearings. By then it's not a head gasket job though, it's a rebuild/refresh anyway.
Would have thought you might have learned after the 1st or 2nd one.
Exactly my point.
if we are splitting blocks its no longer a HG job and your doing a rebuild anyway ...
if i am throwing bearings into an engine for piece of mind then its gona get the lot and cost will rocket.
at no point have i says i would ever strip a block down and reuse bearings. I would use my experience and a little bit of basic common sense to determine if it had to go this far.

As said bearings were in simlar condition with score marks, take my word or not.
Unfortunately I didn’t take pics as changed plan.
You would need to remove cams to check above so not that visible by taking heads off. Not convinced a lot will do that, they will just check oil and think ok.
If head cam housing are mint then its likely bearings eill be fine also but thats upto user to further investigate if they wish.
As you will know subaru builds are not that straight forward if you are fussy, if you find something minor then its a toss between 2 different types of people to replace or just think ‘it be reet’ lol.

But yes agree, inspection is a must at least
So inspect cam journals if fussy then no need to split block ?
Far easier to do no ?
At least we agree that a competant inspection can result in no need to tear apart the block with regards to HG repair.
Oil pickup pipe issues are quite common on track work cars.
3 of my engines were stripped and had 2 with pipe Bolt loose and 1 cracked pipe. All to be pending failures.
So If sump comes off i replace pipe and loctite bolt in.

Hi Tony,
Got there in the end, bit of a rush to have the engine out and refreshed ready for TOTB in the space of a week!!
Ended up running at only 1.5 bar, no LC, no ALS, and at full weight on standard ecu with MAF, hey hoo... still managed to have fun though which is the main thing.
I sacked off the 1/4's after 2 runs, wasn't able to get off the line without bogging down and simply no power to push through. A few years ago I ran a 500bhp classic and managed a 12.07, so I did expect somewhere near a high 13 - low 14 which it was so I sacked it off.
My "Standard" MY06 STi Type20 JDM (350bhp) quarter was 12.65sec 104mph and 0- 60mph 4.6 second. The time only slightly improved with 415Bhp to 12.54 but terminal was 121 IIRC.
Which bogging down. i tried diff Auto, then fully locked then in 2nd back to fully open. 5krpm and 8.2krpm made no big difference,
i soon got very bored so gave up and went back to throwing it off bends Tony
What did you do, push it up the drag strip? 500 should see you knocking around the 10's. My 12.whatever it is was done at 330bhp.
No where near 500 Micky, had issues with it not firing correctly, felt more like 400-450 if lucky in pissing down rain and it's not a lighter classic. I had a 12.07 in a 500bhp classic 5 years ago, I think there was an 11 in it for sure but gave up when the canvas was showing
I abandoned it after two runs, it was terrible.
I'd need around 800bhp to get in the 10s with a lardy full weight hatch.

That was exactly me, and even that what was horrific with winds and rain. Look at how bad it was, 4 wheel drifting and underserved at every corner. Felt better when I went back on the R888's, managed to shave 3 seconds off straight away, then once it cleared a little I shaved 5 servings off iirc.

should have tried it on a racetrack first, that swimming pool looks deep LOL

Saturday was wet but manageable, Sunday was as the above picture all morning so I only made a few runs as it was ridiculous. I pissed around with the DCCD which made next to no difference. After lunch the rain stopped but by then I had packed my camping gear up whilst it stopped raining and put my other wheels back on, strangely managed to shade off 5 seconds simply because I had more grip, and then times started to come down. Conscious that I was on my "going home tyres" I called it a day early which was a shame.
