Default I have longer studs fitted to my Bug - options?

Hi all,

I currently have some longer strengthened wheel studs fitted to my bug eye with nuts and i am looking to smarten them up as the MOT tester recently picked them up saying they could be an issue for Police / other MOT testers due to the amount they stick out - this aside they currently dont look the best.

I was thinking of replacing the studs for some standard length ones but browsing some on the threads on here i have seen some nuts which are quite long and therefore hide the shaft of the stud that sticks out from the face of the alloy - are these what everyone uses? These look like they might do the job as they would tidy the whole thing up

What are my options?

I will try and get a picture up

it looks like at some stage or another that the hub/studs have been replaced, when i replaced both rear hubs on my car one of them had standard length studs and the other hub had longer studs.
i measured the standard one from the hub face,i then wound nuts onto the longer studs, marked the desired length of the measured oe stud and cut the long studs off with a small 4 inch grinder, then you can turn the nuts off once they are cut and this recuts the thread that you damage by grinding the stud off.(if you dont wind the nuts on before you cut the studs off you will never get a nut onto the cut stud) once wound all the nuts off,hey presto, you have oe size studs with nuts that will go on and off easy.
hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I think it's just longer studs that have been fitted , they don't look the best though.

Would longer length nuts not be an option that would cover the exposed stud better?

depends on what wheels you have, but if you are using the ones pictured it should have the castle type nuts which are covered at the end,i can see by the pic you have the wrong nuts on.

is it just the one hub with this long length studs?
best option, cut them down and use oe nuts, would take about 30 mins to do the job and is easy,i expect after cutting a good bit off them you will be able to wire brush them and lubricte them with new nuts i would think be absolutely fine.the long "tuner " type nuts(the longer ones will not be any good for those wheels, also the key to fit them goes inside the nut to do them up,so as they are too long the key would bottom out on the long thread and you wouldnt be able to do them up properly. someone has just fitted the wrong suds, thats all.just cut them down to oe length ensuring that the nuts that you have on at the moment are wound right up to the up so after you cut them off then you can wind old nut off the thread to ensure the thread is ok for new nuts to be fitted.

i would think that even covering the threads with long nuts would still be an MOT fail due to them sticking out.............

as above, trim to suit or fit the proper studs

Oh ok, yeah I am running the standard wheels as per the picture - good to know I can cut them down though instead of having to source new ones. What are the length of the OE studs?

The standard nuts are capped aren't they , I guess that's why they have used the different nuts. Are there any issues with running this setup (nuts?)

I will source some OE nuts ASAP. All four hubs have this set up.

Thanks for both your input

yes,oe nuts are capped,im unsure what the length of oe stud is without taking a wheel off,but maybe its worth putting up a seperate thread to find out the length?this is how i found out one of mine was too long as i broke through the top of the capped nuts when doing up.(after hub replacement)

Sorry to thread jack but what is the best option for spacing wheels by 20mm?

Longer studs as per the OP with normal spacers or hub centric jobbies

Replace with shorter IMO. Those are "huge". My normal studs allow about 12mm of thread. Yours are at least 30mm or more longer than that. I wouldn't try looking for longer nuts. It's the protrusion that's the main issue. Though it's likely the rust that's drawing attention to them.

Yes i am planning to replace with shorter items and source some proper capped nuts. I can then sell on the longer studs providing they arent damaged when removed.

I really dont want to pay £56 for some OE studs however if i can source some second hand then i might have to
