The width of the tyre with the tyre sidewall profile on 215/45 is too wide. under cornering or uneven surfaces it would seriously rub. Hence a slighly lower profile will stop the rubbing higher up in the arch. AFAIK.

I think that 205/45/17 is also okay, don't quote me though.

WellHung, sorry long reply...

Standard tyres on a classic shape Scoob are 205/50x16. Moving up to 17in, Prodrive fit 205/45x17 Pirellis, as they run Pirellis on their rally cars. But they're aren't many brands avialbale in this size and most people don't rate P-Zeros, either.

Tyres to go for are Bridgestone, Toyo or Goodyear, in 215/40x17. Problems are the legendary Bridgestone SO-2 is no more, and the SO-3 is not so well regarded, and expensive. Toyas are excellent, but you'll struggle to get any in 17in before mid-May. Goodyears are in good supply (I bought a set last week for £90 each all-in) but they also have a new F1 which is beginning to filter through. Feedback on these is scant.

215/45x17 is standatd on the new shape car, although quite a few people also fit this tyre on the old-shape cars without problems. They are fractionally taller than ideal so will throw your speedo out a fraction and will tell you you're going slower than you actually are, but the difference is very slight (3%) so if you can get a good deal on quality rubber (NOT the OEM tyres) it's worth considering. They will fit on standard off-set wheels (ET50-52mm) and are higher, not wider, so rubbing shouldn't be a problem.

Quite a few drivers have also fitted 18in wheels, or even 19in. I'm far from convinced there is much performance benefit, especially when traded against price and cost of tyres, the hard ride, and greater liability to wheel damage if you hit somehting like a pot-hole. They do look nice, though

With these tyres, you really need a wider rim than 7in, like 7.5in, and if you go this route the offset will be critical to avoid rubbing on the rears. OZ SuperLegs only go up to ET48 as I recall, which put them into rubbing territory. Prodrive do the very similar P1 wheels at the right ET (£275 each) or a set of four with P-Zeros for £2k )

Finally, if you possibly can, buy your tyres and get them fitted by Tyres Northampton (01604-588599). Pay them a visit and you'll see why I (and many other discerting Scooby users) will no longer go anywehere else. I think Mark at Tyres NH may still have a set of Prodrive PD7 anthracite wheels going cheap - I almost bought them, before a set of P1 wheels came along at the right price .

Sorry for the long reply, but I feel that when you're spending £1k or even £2k, you need to do as much research as possible. The only 100% way to know your new wheels/tyres fit is to put them on and drive them - and then it's too late to go back.

Best regards,

Richard.

If you want to go for big wheels, call Peter Croney at ScoobySport. He can offer you free advice and also sells a few options and knows what fits as he's tried them all.

Cheers Hoppy but unfortunately i ordered the wheels today! Price was too good to miss out on so just ordered them. I was told 215/40/17 will definately not rub and was assured of this when one of the sales team had fitted similar wheels to a scoob a few weeks ago. Thanks for the info anyway, afterall wheels dont wear but tyres do.

The main reason for the tyre size recommendations given above are because they give the smallest deviataion in rolling radius for your speedo to remain reasonably accurate.

I've ran 215 40's on both of my early model Imprezas and had no fouling issues. becomes more likely though as you fit wheels with lower ET values and strat loading the car up with people Etc.

Mike.
