Default Advice removing rear calipers...

Attatched is a pic of the rear of my 2 pots (am removing them to get them conditioned by godspeed/new discs etc)...

Am i right in thinking i must remove these 2 bolts 1st before removing the usual 17mm caliper bolts yes??? Someone mentioned something about having a screw to turn but i cant find it????

Any help greatly appreciated here guys???

Thanks
Andy

So its sounds like you have newage 2 pots with a fitting bracket? Even so, only the two usualt caliper bolts have to come off to remove just the caliper.

the 2 17mm bolts that join to the back of the hub are there, but before i can get to the there are 2 more (14mm) bolts that are again top and bottom - but right in front of you???

Am trying to sort pic out btw!

Thanks guys

But you said 2 pots, you wouldn't have those on the rear unless someone put them on. You'd just have sliding single pot calipers. Now it make sense what you are saying.
the smaller bolts are part of the caliper carrier. You don't have to remove those first, just get the 17mm's off.

They are single pots and you just need to undo the 2 17mm bolts to remove them from the hub

Wow those do need a re-furb.
Probably the price you are paying for the re-furb, you could get soem 2 pots on the rear. Look much nicer and obviously stop better.

to be honest bud thats probaly what im gonna do neway...

for some reason i was under the presumption it already had 2 pots on the rear (which they obviusly dont!!ha) - so will look into it.

Just out of curiosity, is there still some sort of screw i should be undoing to remove the rear discs??? caliper off but disc doesnt want to move buddy??
Thanks for your time fella

There is oblong rubber grommet on the back, behind the discs, pull that out and there is a cog you turn using a screw driver to release the handbrake shoes. Its not easy without looking at it first, so if you can get your head under there, its easier.

Also, you can put two bolts into the hub part of the disc, to push it outwards, but don't do that until youve done the first bit.

Handbrake off?

Also there should be a small oblong grommet in the back plate. Take it out and you'll see the adjustment mechanism to loosen the hand brake shoes away from the drum.

Think that makes sense.

Doesn't have to be a short screw driver, fairly narrow would be good though.

What will help you is if you can bend the screw driver near the end, so it's sort of but not quite, L shaped, makes moving the cog easier.

Don't apologise for asking questions, how else would you find out. We all started somewhere.

Even once you have the handbrake shoes released your'e probably going to have to screw a couple of bolts through the rotors and then tap it with a copper mallet to crack it off, judging by the appearance of that rear disc. Mine looked immaculate and they still needed the bolts screwing through and a couple of hearty smacks with a mallet to free them. I think the bolts were M8's 13mm heads that I used.

So what sort of action am i trying to do inside the hole? is it like a screw, or am i moving something?? Its quite hard as i cant see directly into it???

Also am i right in thinking that once this is done i will probaly have to screw the 14mm bolts (that hold the caliper in place) back in to kinda push the disc away from the hub yes???

The STi Type R had 2-pot calipers, the normal STi didn't.

It's a little toothed cog, it moves either up or down to loosen/tighten.

Obviously adjust it back when you refit discs.

It's not the 14mm bolts for the calipers that will push the disc away from the hub. If you look at the outward face of your rear discs they will have holes in them where the wheel studs are located, one of which can be seen in your picture which shows the rusty red caliper. If you have the handbrake released, the chances are that by screwing a couple of bolts into those threaded holes and then giving the disc a couple of hearty taps it will come free. I recently changed all four discs on my car using that approach for releasing the rears with no problems, or having to tinker with winding the handbrake shoes in through the hole in the rear plate. You will definitely need the handbrake to be released to facilitate the rear disc removal.

incase it helps the little wheel through the hole in the back plate needs to be wound in downwards direction to release handbrake shoes on both sides.
A bright torch will help loads
