Just had my 1000 mile service done and I mentioned the squealing from the front brakes.
They said they are looking into it, something to do with a layer that forms over the brakes while it's standing.
How come then after driving for half an hour it still does it, also they always squeal in reverse.
Anyone else had this problem?
I had it on my old MY99 and was hoping this would have been sorted on the new car.
Also when starting first thing in mornings sometimes it just starts then stalls.
have I got a Late built Friday afternoon car?

I had nasty sounding brakes on my MY01 wrx. Took it in and they put some copper ease on it which helped. Recently had my discs changed and its started up again now. It even happens in reverse. Strange...

My wife's Renault Scénic does exactly the same. Copper paste on the back of the pads seems to ease it for a few(!) miles though....

My STI brakes did the reverse squeal two mornings in a row (it was loud, really loud) at about a similar number of miles to you. Gave the brakes some serious stick and it hasn't happened since (2.5K miles now). No problem when driving forwards. Could be either dampness or a trailing edge on the pads that only bites in reverse (should wear off).

Starts first time.

Know that you mention it..yes they do...and strangely enough in reverse !!

Only seems to do it when braking v.gently at low speeds.

Scrappy,

So why don't my AP's (which are (I think) the same size) do it then?

I think it's also something to do with Disc material 'cos my OE MY00 brakes did it but my AP's don't......

Yep, STi7 Prodrive model, exactly the same. Low speed braking going forward squeel. Reverse squeel, VERY loud....

I going to run with Ken's advice and see what they are like after a couple of thousand miles. 880 on mine now.

Gotta say, very embarrasing when people are admiring the car, and everyone jumps a mile at the high pitched squeel...

Simon

It will be down to the pad grade.

Mintex 1155 were famous for it and I suspect that the new material may even be made by Mintex as the sound is very similar.

Its a shame when you turn heads because of the blood curdling screach, instead of because you £28k looks/sounds so sexy

We have STi7 replacement pads in Pagid's latest RS42-1 material in stock. Silent running, kind to discs and excellent friction. Virtually no dust too

Pete

How much mate? Like the sound of no dust. Are they noticably different to the standard pads?

Cheers

the surface of the pads will be glazed take them out clean the edges of the metal backing (a gentle use of a file helps a lot) take the shims apart coat each side with copper slip rub the pad surface with some emery until it looks dull and like new material then reassemble coating each edge of the metal backing with copper slip as well. this usally works

This has just started on my car too ('02 WRX) first noticed it after the 1k service, it only happens with gentle braking at slow speeds.
Tried lots of heavy braking to wear the pads down to some fresh material but still the same.
F#cking annoying and embarrasing too

If it's still doing it when the car goes into TSL for the Eibachs I might upgrade the pads....

Scared the missus sh1tl3ss today when reversing off the drive. LOL

Not really funny though, starting to get annoying now. Just over a thousand miles so will live with it for a little while longer.

Damn, it happened again when reversing off the drive this morning. The brakes are totally silent under normal circumstances, braking at slow or fast speeds. No noise in reverse after the the first squeel.

Only thing common with the last time was a short journey and a lot of water on the roads (about normal for the UK in other words). The brakes (disks and pads) would have been cold and damp.

Ah heck, it will only wake the neighbours up on one of my 5am starts.

Ken,for the sake of your neighbours get a Prodrive backbox and it'll drown out the noise of the brakes; wake 'em up PROPER!

Had one on my MY00. Could shake the nails out of the dividing fence. Wife could hear the Scoob far enough away to get the kettle on, let it brew and have the cuppa poured by the time I arrived.

Now much more subtle apart from the brake noise that sounds like half a dozen cats with their dangly bits caught in the calipers.

Ken ... earplugs anyone?

Yes Ken, more prominant when the general conditions are wet or damp. Yesterday, had washed the car a couple of hours earlier, so pads and discs would have still been damp.

On other occasions as well, it has been more notiable when the road surface has been wet...

If this doesn't go away, what does everyone think the chances are of getting Subaru/IM to replace with alternative pads under warranty?

Would be interesting!

Running Piagid semi-race pads (light blue colour) on my MY01 STI RA with the std Brembos. They go "clonk" in forward / reverse, squeal very badly in reverse, and squeal badly at certain pedal pressures when going forward. I just put it down to being a high performance item...

Don't even notice it anymore.
