Hi all,

I'm trying to fathom out the wonderful world of offsets so that I can happily upgrade the wheels & tyres on my MY01. Current contenders are Prodrive 18" or the Detroit F1's, both with Toyos on.

The only problem comes from understanding what the offsets are for each of the above and what difference this makes. I've been told that having the wrong offset could affect handling, and that the F1's probably wouldn't be suitable. This is confusing as MIM and Technomagnesio wheels are quoted on an official Subaru options brochure????

Any help or advice gratefully received, as I'm not keen on spending a grand or so on making my car handle like a pile of poo.

The techno wheels are currently used by no other than the great Pete Croney on his MY01....

Not sure of the exact offset for your car - but the offset is v.important - so you must check it will fit your car (you dont say which model).

I think the techno's are the nicest looking wheel currently available for the WRX Scooby. And they are cheaper than the Prodrive alternative!!!

car is an MY01 "bugeyed wonder" WRX. I think that the Techno wheels look pretty good too. Perhaps Pete could comment on this if he's reading, I'm sure that it's in his interests if SS sell Techno wheels!

What's the deal with offset. Is it just a case of the wheels fitting over your calipers or does it affect handling

Offset is very important for the handling of the car and not just the clearance over the brakes. The WRX comes as standard with +52 offset, but some of the alternative wheels that are +48 are OK. Anything less than this will effect the handling to some extent.

Just for completeness, the STi wheels are a different offset entirely.

Pete's car on the Scoobysport website is shown as running on Speedline GT1s, but the pictures are about a year old so he may well have changed. The GT1s are awesome wheels - very light for their size and strength.

1) Std MY01 offset is actually ET55.
2) Pete is away at the mo, but to find out the Tecno Detroit F1 ET you can ring Tony who is Pete's wheel guru on 01268 591444.
3) Pete is indeed running the F1's on his MY01 so probably no need to ring - they will go on fine!

have prodrive 18's at the moment,but am picking up f1's on thursday from tn,only reason for change is the prodrives are now very common.

As Dave T-S said, the std 01-02 wheel is ET55, on both the WRX and STi. The STi is marked ET53, but measures as ET55.

OZ are ET53 and Detroit F1 are ET48.

Personally I think that ET48 gives a perfect weight to the steering, something that has been universally criticised when using the standard ET55 wheels.

I've just ordered a set from Tony and can't wait to get them on.
Are there any pictures of your car with the F1's on. I'm sure that I saw some pictures on the Gallery a few months ago, but can't find them any more!

You should check out www.performanceAlloys.com they have these wheels in stock:

An offset of between +45 and +52 will fit with NO change to the handling of the car.

Pete Croney (post above) is the UK importer of the Tecnomagnesio Detroit F1 wheel.......

A 14mm increase in track with F1's over the OEM wheel WILL alter the handling of a car so fitted - it improves it.....

Can we re-ee-wind a moment..

So if i buy some spanky Detroit wheels, then next year buy an STI UK - they wont fit the new car???

Are there any wheels that fit both???
Whats the acceptable range for ET of the MY01/STI UK???

Jza,

Can't comment on the STI question, but I'd hazard a guess that they wouldn't fit. The only ones that people seem to be going for are the soon to be released prodrive wheels.

As for MY01, the standard wheels are ET55, but on the advice of Pete Croney, I'm about to put the F1's on which have an offset of ET48. This apparently makes the steering feel a bit meatier, I'll let you know next week when they are on.
