Default '96 UK turbo brake upgrade - what are my options?

Hi,

I am not very up on upgrades so would like some advise.
My brakes probably need an overhaul, I need pads very shortly and last time they were done they always squeaked when driving.

Rather than try and save mine I was thinking it would be worth replacing them.
I know a could just replace with stock stuff but if I want to upgrade them, what is the next best thing to standard? (cheapest upgrade I could do basically)

Scoobyclinic to new pads and drilled/grovved discs for £100

But what about calipers - would I upgrade those?

thanks

Alyn at AS Performance - Rally Motorsport Specialists gives good advice on brakes.

4 pots from later models with slightly bigger discs are cheap (you will have to check they fit under your wheels) with goodridge hosing are a good complete upgrade but not particularly cheap (think mine in total were about £400).

Just so I know for my mechanic mate (who would be fitting stuff)

If I got 4 pots off a later model, then a pads and disc package from scoobyclinic or godspeed type places and some braided hoses... would all that stuff just be a straight swap... so no aterations, needed, just a bolt on replacment even though it's an upgrade?

So... what are the specifics I could start pricing up and where to find them?

- 4 pot front calipers (what year car would I find these off)? ebay?

- Pads and Discs package? scoobyclinic OK? or godspeed better?

- Braided hoses? what specifically would I ask for? where from?

- anything else?

thanks for the help

4 pot calipers are a straight swap (they will have Subaru embossed on them)
such as these **SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI VER 4 4 POT BRAKE CALIPERS** on eBay, also, Subaru, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 12-Oct-08 18:16:52 BST)
I use standard discs and had Black Diamond pads which were great imo.

Goodridge to a fine selection of braided hoses.GOODRIDGE UK | Home

Hmmm, will check tomorrow in the day light... can not remember what mine look like but the calipers I already have might be 4 pots... I'm not sure is there an obvious differance?
My car is a wagon '96 UK turbo 2000.

Pretty sure as standard the 4 pots didn't come on UK cars until about 99/00.

the main differance is the SUBARU embossed on them whereas the 2 pots have no writing on them

£400 for standard 4 pots with standard size discs or £684 for a complete new comprehensive kit with new 330mm rotors, bells brackets, braided lines, pads and a pair of new 8 pot calipers

thanks for the pic.
no, mine are 2 pots then... basically just plan cast iron looking.

thanks for the quote bren@apex, seems like this would cost a lot more than I wanted to spend although I can appreciate it's probably one of he best upgrades for the money.

It looks like it's upgrading to 4 pots where the bulk of extra cost is coming from so unless I find a bargin on ebay I will probably just get new pads and discs and maybe recon 2 pots.

you will easily find 4 pots on ebay, they are there all the time for about £100-£150,make sure they have been reconditioned(easy to do if you have a seal kit,get these from godspeed for about £25)as they are notorious for sticking pistons, again easy to sort out,but nicer if someone has done the work for you. Then again speak to ian at godspeed, and get his 294mm grooved front disks for under £100.Flush out your brake fluid, and replace with dot 5,but most of all,fit braided brake lines,as this gives a much firmer brake pedal. If funds allow, again godspeed can do you the best pad for the impreza, the ferrodo ds2500 for about £100.I know these are all quality products, because i have them on my classic, and it stops so much better than before. If you really are strapped,i have my old front disks, pads and rear ventilated disks and callipers/ pads, that i removed. The front disks/pads are brand new(less than 100 miles),but much bigger than yours, the rears should be superior to yours, just check to see if your rear disks are vented,if not they are inferior to the ones i have.If interested PM me,it would save you quite a big chunk of cash
