Default wheel size vs ride comfort

If i were to upgrade from 16 to 17 inch alloys, would it make the ride bumpier or nicer?

Depends so much on the suspension set up too... and if its classic or newage. My newage with 18" and prodrive suspension is a better ride than OEM.

If you buy the same make and design/model and size ratio equivalent of the tyre on the 18's as was on the 17's and put the tyre pressures exactly the same as what they were, then you will not notice any difference from when the 17's were new.

If your new rims are lighter it could actually improve the ride. Tyre choice does make a major difference, softer sidewalls (eg F1s) tend to give a better ride.
