Default problemo

Loud whistling/sqealing from front of car. Goes away on braking but I have noticed that when applying brake pedal there is an awful creaking sound like old floorboards!! and the pedal travels a long way with this noise. Is it as simple as needing new discs and pads or something more serious? I dont want to take it to the stealer if i can do the brakes myself.

thanks in advance

you don't say what car and brakes you have, Sounds like the wear indicators on the pads, but could be wrong, you can usually see how much material is left on the pads through the wheels otherwise jack up the car and make sure that the wheel bearing hasn't gone.
