Default New Michelin Tyre Design

Have just recieved this email/pics. What do you guys think, could you see them on your subaru

New Michelin Tyre Design

Radical new tire design by Michelin. The next generation of tires.

They had a pair at the Philadelphia car show.

These tires are airless (you can tell this blokes a yank!) and are scheduled to be out on the market very soon.

The bad news for law enforcement is that spike strips will not work on these tires.

This is what great R&D will do, and just think of the impact on existing technology:
... no more air valves
... no more air compressors at gas stations
... no more repair kits

These are actual pictures taken in the South Carolina plant of Michelin.
It will be awhile before they are available to the automotive industry.

Think I read/saw these in New Scientist a few months ago. The wheels fitted to that car are quite different to the bottom photo. Won't be seeing those in 20" rims unless you have a Lambo or Porsche ... tractor

They'd be interesting on gravel / snow............

Never catch on in America though as there's no sidewall to paint white

Endless hours of cleaning fun.
Endless trips with them out of ballllaaaannnncce...wobble.

Nothing serious in it IMHO.

I wonder how you adjust pressure for a loaded and unloaded car?

Numpty, they did it like this so you can see how they work on the car,if they did put a side wall on it,you would see just an odinary tire.

A couple of years old:
Michelin | Press Release: MICHELIN LETS THE AIR OUT OF FUTURE TIRE INNOVATION

Nothing much since then... yes they'd have sidewalls on the real thing.

The hubby knows some-one who is starting to do these he says they are not very good for alloys due to strength of the sidewall {i don't understand} he says they are the next up from the run flats, a so called millenium tyres ?

Good marketing story by Michelin, but as Graham points out, going out of balance would surely be a problem. I also wonder what their rolling resistance would be? Maybe some specialized applications, but not mainstream IMHO.

The main problems with these used to be that the radial bits of plastic/rubber would deteriorate quite rapidly and deform plastically rather than returning to original shape so tyre is no longer circular and has different resistances depending on where it was in contact with the ground. Obviously not a problem with an air filled tyre.
