Default Wheel Size Debate

Hi,

Own an 05 plate WRX (no PPP) and quite fancy taking advantage of the inovit wheel group buy. Unfortunately not too sure what size to get 17" or 18". Had a Clio 172 before my scooby and swapped the standard wheels for 17" which made the ride crashy and uncomfortable so took them off after 6 months.

Main reason I want new wheels is that think the standard ones look too small in the scooby arches although this may be the style of the wheel. Thought if I bought multispokes with spokes that go right to the edge then this may make the wheels look slightly bigger. Would potentially get 18" but don't really want to ruin handling and acceleration. Anybody got good advice on what size to get (although it is probably a personal thing) or what they would recommend?

Cheers,

Peter

You can't go wrong with 18's and they are designed to fit them.

With the PPP its actually recommended that 18's are fitted.
You'll need 225/40/18 tyres which I find comfortable enough even with Prodrive springs.

17's on at the mo for winter use.

My 01 WRX Wagon had 7.5 x 18's on when I bought it, but as I do a fair bit of driving up & down farm tracks and onto building sites I wanted a bit more sidewall to protect the rims, so I changed to 7 x 17's, and like the drive better overall myself.

Mine's been lowered on Eibachs, and personally I think it makes the ride better, firm but not crashy.
And I sold the 18's on eBay with two bald tyres for more than I paid for the 17's with new tyres, so everyones a winner for me!

18's all the way, otherwise way change?
Again, Prodrive recommend 18's.

One reason why the ride is OK on 18s is that a decent forged 18" rim is about 4 kg lighter that the OE 17". The reduction in unsprung weight is quite beneficially noticeable.
