Driving home from work this evening i had to slam on pretty sharply due to some idiot pulling out in front of me, point is after that i have a nasty grinding,screeching sound. noise is really noticable at low speeds and i think get a bit louder when the brakes are applied.

any ideas? the cars a 98 uk turbo wagon at 94k

Might be your pads ready for changing. Subaru brakes have a piece of metal on one of the pads on the rear and one of the pads on the front which is a wear indicator. When your pads are low they make a noticable scraping or squealing noise so you know there ready for changing.

 

Probably that, had that happen to me after a heavy duty braking. The brake pads & co. already had about 25,000 km......

 

Could also be a piece of grit, trapped between the disc and the disc protector at the rear of the disc. Grit tends to be chucked up more when you brake as the tyres really dig in.

Drive the car slowly, listen which side it comes from. Remove that wheel and dislodge the grit.

Happened twice to me before I changed my front brakes for Brembos.

My pads were shot, and one had a factory defect (sort of), it was out of limits as far the compound goes.

As a result of that situation, one of the discs was being eaten into, which sucked, but it went in under the guarantee.

 

could be grit getting trapped.also heard of wheel balancing weights coming off and getting trapped

 

Ouch! That is not good!

Also the rust on the discs is a "hazard" if the car has been exposed to intense rain for a extended period of time without moving obviously.

I actually saw my faulty pad and it was quite obvious compared the other less messed up ones.

Nothing like good old asbestos to help!
