Help

Can anyone advise on what is causing a nasty turbo screech when cold.

Basically I can hear a nasty squeel noise when the turbo scrolls up. This only happens when the engine is cold and has just been started. The turbo squeals when it initially spools up. It only happens for a few seconds then I hear it spool up as I would expect via the SS mongoose DP.

Boost is fine when I hoof it when the engine gets warm.

Anyone any advise ?

Thanks

Mark

It may be lack of lubrication, taking a second or two for the oil to pump to the turbo bearings. There may be a non-return valve in there that is non functioning. Pete Croney or someone better qualified than me can probably give you a better answer.

What year/mileage/turbo is the car? Does it do a lot of high speed runs, and if so do you let it idle for a minute or two when stopping?

Sure it's the turbo and not the water pump pulley? Water pump pulleys screech, never heard a turbo do it. Cheaper to replace too

Water pumps driven by V belts can squeal. Scoob pumps are driven by Poly-V belts which do not squeal.

Its certainly the turbo. Can hear it scroll up and down. Its ALWAYs left to idle without fail for at least a minute. This morning its got worse though. Just blipping the throttle results in a noise similar to a flymo with the blade just scratching the casing....(sorry it was the best simarly I could think of)

DaveT-S ~ Yeah I'm thinking oil feed now as well.

Its a UK94 with a new turbo fitted last spring...not sure of the turbo type thou.
Runs 1.3 bar.

ho hum....

Cheers

Mark,

It sounds like what happened to my old 200 sx the bearings were well worn and the impeller was catching on the housing, when the oil pressure was normal the clearance between impeller and housing was restored and no scrapeing. I took the induction hose off the impeller housing, the one that goes to the centre of the turbo, then gently pushing sideways on the shaft you could feel contact and see abit of scoring inside the housing.
