Measure the actual tread. It is that that counts really.
I had similar happen to me, and i changed both, and my old one was measured at having 4mm left. I believe, although i cannot remember for sure, they have 8mm new. These were Toyo T1-R's.
The one that came off i keep as a spare for when it happens again, and lo and behold, i got another tyre with a screw in it now, so hopefully i can use it for that.

Sorry i meant to comment on that.
I don't know being honest about it, i ain't even that convinced as to what damage can occur if you only change one tyre.
I have always listened to what my garage has told me, and it's more than one garage that has gone on about changing the pair, so there must be something in it.
The technicals i know nothing about.
But i would not have run an 8mm tread with the 4mm tread thats for sure. I was advised against it, so i took that advice.
Sorry i cannot be more specific but i dont know so i ain't gonna bullsiht you.
Someone will probably post who knows the reasoning behind it.

Punctures can be fixed if its in the middle of the tire, what they do is fit a rubber bung on the holea and jobs a gooden! The other thing to bare in mind is that most tires on subaru's are directional so thet can only swapped to front and back and not cross over, if your car is anything like mine its always the front passenger tire is that that wears first, so in opinion you can just replace one depending on which tire it is.
