Best road/track tyres for STi PPP?
I have two sets of wheels for my 52 plate STI PPP, one for road one for track.
The tyres I have been using are Kumo & Eccsta 225/45 R17. Not great tyres I know, but I have found I've been chewing through them big time on the track, especially around the edges. Photos I have reflect that I use most of the tyre sidewall on some bends. Not big or clever I know, but hey, it's fun. At my last track day I was recommended Toyo's as they have a significantly stronger sidewall
So I need 8 replacement tyres, and haven't got big budget. I've been checking on BlackCircles for prices which gives the list below, but is there anyone out there who can a) recommend which tyre would suit my usage and b) know anywhere cheap to get 8 of them?
I did do a search before posting, but couldn;t find anything close enough to be useful.
cheers!
Jay

i have t1-r's they are very good on road and good on track but arent really up to seriously hard driving laps on track ,shoulders arent strong enough and the top half of the tyre wall wears.
r888's are loads better ,very very strong shoulders and awesome grip, only 100 quid each for my car too.

R888's are a dry weather tyre, no good for road use up north
RE070's are a compromise but a few people dont like them because they aint that good in the wet though for some reason I dont have that problem and I do push my car
You may find some bargains on ebay (got a full set of nearly new RE070's which had covered delivery miles for 300 quid ) or just ask your local tyre place (try selectatyre in Bredbury, opposite the robbies brewery ) to see what they would recommend

my 888's have driven on plenty of wet roads ,if its just damp they still grip better than road tyres ,its only standing water they dont like and who drives quickly in conditions like that!!!!

I'm liking Avon ZZ3's at £260 for 4, I have confirmed this for myself at camskill. Thanks for this p1doc, I am going to the Nurburgring this October (www.circuit-days.co.uk 3 day trip for £700 if anyone's interested) and appreciate the wet weather capability really matters there!
But then my tyre specialist tells me the Avon's simply don't compare to Toyo T1-R's...I think I knew this for myself already, but am a little concerned re the wet weather capabilities of the Toyo's considering the Nurburing visit.
I ain't being a tight ****, the Toyo's are only £65 extra for a set over Avon's, I just want to buy what's right. Anyone care to comment on T1-R wet weather performance...better still anyone driven the Ring on them?

Jay, I'm in the process of buying some new tyres myself, although spending a little more on just 4 and for 18's. Looking at f1gsd3's atm, which are coming in at £106 each all in from my man. Get over to our forum at amita, which darren runs, the contact details for him are there. http://forums.amita.uk.net/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=16
That price at camskill is a killer, and got to be worth it even if they are a bit dodgy for the ring. Pm andy_s, as he's been running t1'r's on his old scoob before he sold it.

The toyos dont have strong sidewalls the do flex under hard load the Goodyear GDS3 do have strong sidewalls, The RE070's have a lot stronger sidewalls, thats whats on mine at the minute!! the goodyears will be on for the winter months
If you give me a bell Jason i may be able to get a very good price on the Avons, they also do a track day tyre which is supposed to be very good as well. I had the ZZ3 on my classic when the first came out they where good but made lots of sqealing noises
Cheers Andy
PS have you changed your mobile number?
