Hi all,
I'm looking at upgrading the brakes when the current ones wear out, which I don't think is too far away.......
I've got the 16" MY99 standard alloys (5 spokes) and wanted to know what my options are. As far as I know the Prodrive upgrade and AP's require 17's which is not an option, so I wanted to know what the best thing was for the 16's. I also understand that the Godspeed big disc conversion will only fit with 17's, is this true?
Bearing all this in mind it looks like the way forward would be braided hoses and dot 5 fluid(for better pedal feel), with upgraded discs and pads - what do you all think? If so, what discs and pads for fast road use, as I don't do track days, well not yet!! Group N discs and pads? or some other uprated jobbies?
Cheers for the help in advance
Neil.

Hey mate. Scoobysport do a Brembo Calliper Ap Disc kit which fits under 16's and is excellent.
Ap do their own 4 pot kit wich fits under 16's and Stef used to great effect on many a trackday. (Scoobymania(amongst others) market this)
TSL are now selling a 3rd kit!
If you have some money to burn there is alot of choice!
Chuck
(Dont be daft mate - get some new 17's and AP 6 pot or Alcon )

Hi Neil , I take it you have the Subaru four pot calipers already fitted ? If so we can supply the following .
294mm one piece discs , drilled , grooved or both £150 a pair .
294mm disc and bells , drilled , grooved or both £350 a pair
our 335mm kit will only fit with the 17" wheels , not 16" ,
We have just finished making a 308mm kit with the Black Brembo 4 pot calipers that others use , Our customer has written his car off before fitting them ,He has asked us to see if we can sell it for him , He paid £1000 complete but wants £900 , The discs are grooved and drilled , and the kit is complete with brackets and pads , this kit will fit under your 16" wheels ,
If you have the 2 pot calipers fitted to your car , we can supply you with a 308mm disc and bell , and steel four pot calipers as a kit that is £550 complete .This will also fit under your 16" wheels .
I hope this helps ,
Many thanks , Ian

Blimey guys that was quick!!!!
Hey Chuck - see ya tomorrow morning mate
Should really have said that around 500 quid is gonna be about max, I'd love a set of 17's and a new calipers/discs but haven't got the money at the mo, due to recent bathroom redecorating I really must get my priorities straight!!!! Not sure when they'll need doing but I think its gonna be soon, the pads are (I think) just over half worn and when they're gone I think the discs are gonna be dead too
Ian - thanks for that , shame about your big disc conversion As I said above unfortunately around 500 notes will be max to spend on it so that rules out that customers kit too
My car does indeed have the 4-pot subaru calipers so looks like I'll be looking for something to couple with them. Sorry to be a bit of an idiot but what do you mean by discs and bells?
Do you think its wise to do the braided hoses and dot 4/5 fluid too?
Cheers again for the exceptionally quick replies

I had the Scoobysport 'Group N' grooved discs (not really group N as they are grooved, but same material) with DS2000, braided hoses and Silkolene Race brake fluid. This was a damn good cross country setup.

ian,
would you consider making up a four pot brembo kit for the back wheels which replaces the standard drum handbrake with a hand opertaed caliper acting on one larger disc brake.
I will have 18 inch wheels soon, and want something better to fill the gaping holes bewteen the spokes.
would consider getting some brembo 6 or 8 pots for a 355mm disc up front and moving my ap six pots to the back, but can you make up brackets and discs to accomodate?
Even if it means retaining the rear drum and you making up some discs for the back with a alrger diameter, is this possible?
If you need a test car, mines always bloody off the road, another few weeks wouldnt make much diff

The "one piece" discs are from the same material as the "separates" discs from bells?
Are they ventilated?
Why then the "separates" are so expensive if you can change three pairs of "one piece" with more or less the same price?

If it is any use, I have just had the 335mm Godspeed kit, fitted and it is MEGA, so I would think that the smaller kit would also be well good.
If you can afford it, this would be what I would recommend.
(Usual disclaimer - no relation to Godspeed etc etc)

I`m currently awaiting delivery of the 308mm kit from Godspeed, researched this quite abit and found opinions very good. If you`ve got time to wait will post more when I get em fitted and bedded in Ian gave very helpful advice and if his delivery is on time then my advice would be to speak to him.. Try doing a search thers loads of threads covering this exact topic.

Get the Godspeed 2 piece 294mm kit. If you're going to give them any stick, bell mounted is the best way to go and at those prices you wont go wrong.
Also get braided hoses and replace the fluid with Dot 5 or 5.1

I've got the two piece discs and bells (294mm) from Ian Godney, with Mintex 1144's, braided lines and good fluid.
I've given them plenty of stick with no problems.
The pedal feels good, and the initial bite is excellent, and, mine don't squeel, some do with those pads.
They look pretty cool too!http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?threadid=32486

The price quoted of £550 to upgrade to 4 pot calipers, is that for front & rear? does it include pads, vat & delivery?
At the mo I may only need to replace my rear discs currently on 2 pot calipers - do you sell a disc suitable for use with the two pots?

I can also vouch for the 294mm two part Godspeed kit.
I have been on track days before and warped original disks, so I liked the idea of the two part disk, which is less prone to warping.
After a full day at Donnigton on Saturday, using Ferodo DS2000 pads, I had no warp at all. Though I do need to buy some decent brake fluid which will resist boiling

So is a 294mm disc the biggest that can be mated with the Subaru 4pots on 16" wheels ?
How does the 294mm compare on bite (with same pads) to the standard 290mm(?) disc ?
I'm really after a lot more bite but already have EBC Green Stuff pads.....any suggestions ???

Pete,
I don't really think there is much gain in bite. The contact area on the disk is the same and I'm using the original subaru calliper.
I can't comment on whether you would notice any improvement on using a different pad to the EBC. From what I have heard they are well rated as a fast-road pad.
The gains are to be had by resisting brake fade and disk warping, so you can do more than 3 consecutive high-speed stops.

Neil,
As you are in kent, have a chat to Jeff at HiSpec on 01322 286850.
He will advise you on all options from discs only, through AP, Brembo, Willwood and even their own.
I have just had a set fitted ... excellent kit with good impartial and informative advice.
Pic below of my 325mm discs that go under my 16's aswell.
