Default Sti Brembo's weigh a ton!

Got some Sti Brembo's to upgrade my JDM WRX - they turned up today and weigh a ton! Has anyone any experience with the unsprung weight increasing and it spoiling the ride/ handling? Are the standard dampers/ springs going to cope? thanks.

There is such a big market in brake upgrades - surely this can't be a new issue. Someone must know something?

They weigh a ton compared with the AP racing type alloy calipers. Do they really weigh a lot more than the standard subaru logoed 4 pot cast iron calipers?

Hi Chelspeed, perhaps you can tell me? You see I'm replacing the JDM bugeye WRX standard calipers - they are only the old style two pots. Also, are the Sti 8 brembo's steel or alloy?

Also the weight issue reflects the discs - I guess this is where nost of the weight is.

you'll not have any issues regarding weight unless you plan on competing or whatever.................they are big numb calipers though and suffer as a heat sink during extreme use.................

I'm uprating them for road and occasional trackday use do want some decent pads. I've been using Mintex 1144 with good results on the two pot - should I stick with them even though they are dusty or something else?

Stockcar can you supply these things at a reasonable cost?

Hi Howard
Hope your happy with brakes they do work well with pads (EBC reds) that you got with them, if you think there heavy you should feel the wieght of the AP 362mm discs i replaced them with, i would guess at least 1.5 times as heavy.

STI calipers are alloy and are heavy but they are big and have four big pistons.

My AP brakes are wiegh more but i have not noticed any slow up in steering etc.

Jase.

Hi Jase

They arrived fine. Not fitted them yet - perhaps this weekend. I was amazed at the weight, but I guess they can do plenty of work.

Thanks again.

Can't I'm afraid, I replaced the STi brembos with AP 6 pots. The AP calipers are much lighter than the Brembos even with being 6 pot rather than 4. I assumed this was because the AP's are alloy and the Brembos are steel.

My AP caliper is surprisingly light for the size of it I reckon.

AP's are designed for low weight and high heat dissipation.................

the BREMBO is simply a mass produced "race look" caliper, and although alloy is not exactly using space-age technology.............looks nice and works reasonably on a road car, sucks if used in production racing, etc................
