Tyre wear - how many miles per set?
Just gone through my first set of fronts after 8.5k miles. Is this excessive wear - and is it due to my driving which I would describe as "spirited" (no I don't do donuts). I planned to swap fronts to rear at the 10k mile service but that plan is shot to bits now...
The wear pattern is a worn (slick!) stripe about 10mm wide on the outer shoulder of the tyres (fronts only) which are the OE Bridgestone RE050's particularly on the nearside one (i.e. the most useful one on roundabouts!). The demo car at the dealers also had this pattern - so I guess it is geometry related and not indicitave of faulty set-up?
What did you lot get out of your fronts?
Oh and it's a standard MY03WRX......

Sounds like it is worth checking the alignment / geometry - very common problem on Scoobs. Wear rates varies - I do a lot of motorway miles so I got 20K out of my last set of Toyos. The worst I've had is about 12K from Pirelli's.

Same problem here, at 3000 miles swapped mine front to rear as advised by dealer apparantley "THEY ALL DO IT", last week at 7000 miles I turned the n/s/f on the rim and swapped it with the osr .MY03 WRX Bridgestone re050's excellent for grip but I will have full geometry check before replacing the tyres and then decide whether to ditch the Bridgestones.
Cheers Deano.

Interesting stuff - guess I'm lucky that I don't pick up the bill - it's a company car
I'm fairly happy that the scoob wears the outer shoulders first. I had the reverse problem on the last car (Alfa 156 selespeed) and it twice got through to the canvas on the inside shoulder before I spotted it !! The tyre sat so far under the wing, and the lock was so pathetic, that you couldn't get a good look at the area of interest. Actually that car used to do about 10K miles on a set of fronts and I always ran Goodyear Eagle F1's (are they particularly tacky??)
I think I'll change the fronts and stick to RE050's and hope that the rears last out, and then reconsider for a full set in a few months time.

I once got through three sets of tyres in a year
Since I had the Tein coilovers on the last set of Toyos lasted a year exactly, so about 12,000 miles

I've had a mixed bunch of Toyo's / Pirelli's / Bridgestones / Goodyears / Falkens on Scoobs. The Falkens wore the best @ 19K, the Pirelli's the worst @ 11K. I've just replaced my front 2 Toyo's as I had exactly the same problem on my SpecC with the outside edge of my "roundabout" tyre going completely slick.
I do about 50% motorway driving, 30% A&B Roads and 20% in towns = 100% in traffic though these days

After 13 months, 21K, am about to change the tyres.
Onto the FOURTH set.
Paul
PS The second set (F1s), had only done 2K, then a Don Palmer driving course, had to change them next day

Power steering will not affect how the tyres wear, it is all down to the geometry as well as the driving style of course. My classic STi with the bumpsteer removed and the suspension set up correctly wears the front tyres absolutely flat across the tread (and the rears of course) and gets about 18K out of the fronts and probably 20-22K miles out of the rears. This is on Goodyear F1 D3's and as you say, spirited driving round corners. The roadholding and handling is superb, especially in the rain. Solid anti roll bar links make a very big difference too. Don't know how the standard suspension on a MY03 differs to the classic though.

OEM Bridgestone RE050's on my 03WRX - got 18k from first set, now due for replacing. Mainly 'spirited' B-road driving and *cough* exploring the grip/handling limits on deserted roundabouts late at night Well it is my first scoob so to be expected really
If it wasn't for the outside edges wearing at a quicker rate I could probably get another 2-3k from them. I'm guessing the next set will last a bit longer as I have calmed down 'a bit' now.
Don't know what to get next as I have nothing to compare the RE050's to. Do like their wear-rate though and grip seems pretty good generally.

Blip,
I reckon 18K out of a set is pretty impressive. I've just checked mine again, and they are only approaching bald on a strip about 10mm wide. Maybe I'll leave it until the 10k service in 1k time.
BTW what is it in the geometry that makes the tyres wear in this way???? Toe, camber, everything !!!! Driving on two wheels (I don't do very much of that actually - at least not deliberately )

Oh and another thing.
Did you swap the tyres on the rims, left to right, or just wheels front to rear or not at all????

Sounds like allignment - had same problem on my MY03 - both fronts wearing badly on outside edges (after 4.5k)
Went to Powerstation and got allignment. Driver side front now no problem, but still getting a little wear on passenger front (this one takes the most punishment on roundabout), but not as bad. You could also check tyre pressures and increase a little to take the strain of the edges.
