tyre Profiles

Hi all,
A friend of mine has just bought a Renault Clio. She ordered some 15" alloys for it.
The person on the phone said she need 195/45/15 tyres. As opposed to 195/50. They went on to say that the 50's would scrub and the 45 would clear as they are 5mm lower.
Now I know f all about wheels. I thought the profile was the %age of the width of the tyre i.e. 45% of 195 therefor the tyre is significantly lower than 5mm. more like 9.5mm lower.
Am I right in my thinking - and do you think a 1.4 clio really needs 45 profile tyres for 15" wheels??
Cheers,
Matt.

i would suggest going for 45 profile tyres on the clio, 50 will go on but can scrub if lowered or while carrying passengers. they always used to be a more expensice tyre, but now you probably only pay an extra £40 or so, but its worth the extra.
