Brembo/AP v. 330 Prodrive Conversion?
#1
US 2 pot brakes suck!!! Can anyone repond back as to which brake upgrade performs better-Brembo/AP v. 330 Prodrive Conversion? This is probably not a fair compairison as the Prodrives cost as much as the AP Racing Brakes but I think that they are similar in maintenance costs unlike the AP solution.

I'm probably in one of the best positions to reply to this one. I have had all three.........Firstly Brembos on MY99
Then Prodrive/Alcons on MY00 and now AP 6 pots.
Ruling is as follows.
AP 6 pots rule!!!!!!
Brembos are a close second
The prodrive ones are also v.good but I had problems with cracking discs......

Can't comment personally on the AP's but got the Alcons and their great!
The AP 6 pot is too extreme and not value for money unless you are doing endurance racing = 1hour + They also have a reputation for kicking your ABS in which of course is not good.
For Fast road and track use the 4pots are the ley and on that note the Prodrive kit is a little bit more expensive however there are some good deals to be had, for example I got mine done for £1400.
The Alcon calliper is more advanced than the AP, which hasn't been changed since they came out.
* Macs Power - You said your discs cracked.... did you bed them in properly??? min 500 miles gentle braking and then 4 x 100mph stops.
If you didn't do this they probably warped and cracked.
The Prodrive disc's are quite expensive to replace £600ish so if you get them bed them in right.
Good luck, hope I helped.

Where did you get that the Alcon caliper is more advanced. lol (It's far from that)!
The AP kits that we sell, are all of a relatively new design/variant. <I>The old ones had an AP flag badge stuck on the caliper, the new ones have it cast into the caliper body)</I>
The 6 pot kit is a design of less than 18 months old!
<B>"Too extreme"</B> ....... is that like having an engine which is TOO powerful?
True though that the ultimates are the 6 pots, to gain maximum advantage from these you need a good suspension setup, and slicks.
The AP 4 pots are a better cost effective alternative than the Alcons also, replacement discs are almost twice as expensive as the AP discs and are single piece discs which are heavier and carry more heat into the hub than the 2 part AP set up.
4 pot AP pads are also cheaper than the Alcons (IIRC). AP's also come with Steel braided hoses in the kit, (fronts).
Mike.
<I>(Acknowledging that I'm biased but only cos AP's are better).</I>

Mike, please stop rising to the bait. These infidels will keep asking the same question, instead of doing a search, and seeing that this has been covered numerous times before. WE know that AP are the better setup, cheaper to run too!
Every week the same question gets asked, which is better....
Use the search and compile the evidence for yourself.

Yep I bedded them in properly but I found that the pads supplied were fine for road use but when pushed on track were not up to it. (DS2000) When I changed to DS4003 my discs started cracking. Replaced them at a massive cost and then sold the set.
They are much better than standards and virtually no fade but the AP's must be tried to be believed.
Give Mike a shout at Scoobymania and you'll find that they are cheaper than the prodrive option too.www.scoobymania.co.uk
One of the big things for me was that the bells and discs are seperate on bith brembos and AP's. Hence no warping and cheaper replacements.

First I vote for aps.
got my 6 pots from scoobymania and am more than satisfied with them.
Out of interest since you are considering the alcons you obviously have 17 inch wheels, and to my knowledge the four pots can be bought with the 330mm disc for the same cost as with the 305 mm disc, so why not comapre the same size kits?
The brembo/ap hybrid I think is only available from scoobysport. This is an ap disc and a brembo caliper. These are not any cheaper and only come in 305mm for 16 inch wheels.
some say that since they ultimately have less stopping power than a larger disc (still more than enough to lock up at insane speeds) 0 to 100% braking occurs over a larger pedal travel than with the bigger discs. This will translate to more feel and will also make it easier to choose exactly how much braking you demand.
Of course this is also possible on the 305 complete ap set up not just the hybrid.
Rumour has it, that brembo have teh edge on caliper design but not on discs which is why they bought out ap for their disc technology.
In your case I would still go for the 330 4 pot ap as otherwise they are dwarfed by the rims.
Mike Tuckwood was very competitive on these and I received mine faster than I could afford to pay for them.

Mike,
Perhaps Plantie meant that the finish and looks of the Alcons are far more advanced than the Ap kit ! That was an excellent technical explanation of the differences - " It's far from that " !! Your not an MP are you ?
Lance,
Clearly we all have our own opinion here on what is the best kit. Each of us thinks that our own decision was the right one. All i can say is there probabaly isn't a great deal in all of them.
Your choice.
Steve.
