Question

This is probably very silly but...

I was under the impression that vented or ventilated discs had holes drilled in the disc in order to cool them when rotating.

I've read on the SIDC FAQ and various other sources that Turbos have ventilated discs, at least at the front.

I have a MY00 and the discs are solid all round i.e. no holes drilled through.

Is this correct and if so would someone please explain what ventilated and vented discs are.

Hi

Solid Discs are one disc usually about 8-12mm thick

Vented Discs are like two discs fixed together joined by vanes, the air flowing between the two parts from the hub out cools the discs , these are upto 35mm thick

X-Drilled discs have holes drilled through the discs to help de-gas the pads and aid cooling

Grooved discs do the same, but are less likely to cause cracking of the discs.

An impreza has vented discs at the front as standard, some have vented discs at the rear but some have solid discs - No impreza has grooved or drilled discs as standard - although many aftermarket discs have these features

Cool

paul,

Doesn't the WRC car come with groved discs as standard? I suspect it should do, at the princley sum of circa £350,000 each car!

Barge,

I've seen Tarox drilled and grooved disks for the Impreza - the range is called 'japon sport' or something similar. I think Demon Tweeks sell them, as do retailers such as Powerstation in Cheltenham.

Barge

What are you trying to achieve by having both drilled and grooved discs - each method achieves their aims with some downsides on both (noise from grooves - cracks and pad wear from drilled) but with both you will have no extra benefit but both all the negative points and also a lot less metal on the disc to grip and to asbsorb the heat

Question

thought the point in grooves was to help deglaze pads, not vent the gasses?

AFAIK grooves are designed to deglaze pads and vent gasses, they certainly do both whether its their main reason for existence I don't know
